Sleek BlueAnt X3i Bluetooth speaker packs more bass and range

Whenever something new comes from the Australian audio wizards at BlueAnt, we sit up and take notice. New from the local brand is the BlueAnt X3i Bluetooth portable speaker, a slicker and more powerful version of the previous model from a few years ago. It adds to the big 160W X6 speaker BlueAnt launched earlier this year.

New to the redesign are a few notable improvements. Aiding the BlueAnt X3i speaker’s powerful 30W audio is a sturdier base housed in the brand’s slick Shimmerwave fabric. It also now gives you the option of some flashy colours to choose from.

BlueAnt CEO Taisen Maddern explained that the iterative upgrade comes following several years of engineering improvements aimed at delivering better clarity and deep, thumping bass.

“We’ve made a number of engineering and design tweaks under the hood that simply deliver the best audio experience for a speaker in this form factor and at this price point ($249),” Maddern said. “What our customers are getting is a speaker which can be the feature speaker in any room or party, one that can be taken anywhere and everywhere, or one that can exist at home without standing out yet deliver the right level of audio for any setting or mood.”

BlueAnt X3i delivers durable portable audio power

Waterproof rated at IP67, you can easily take the speaker with you to pool parties or the beach, with little stress of an accident ruining your device. Plus, you can connect two BlueAnt X3i speakers together for more of a surround sound experience, providing up to 30 metres of connectivity range. It also benefits from Siri and Google Assistant support, with an in-built mic letting you control the music with your voice.

Leaning heavily into the portable form factor, the speaker yields 15 hours of play, with a built-in power bank and USB-C charging helping you get more listening time. Housed within its small chassis is Grammy award-winning digital signal processing (DSP) software, aimed at producing clear highs and deep lows. In layman’s terms: you should get good performance out of the X3i no matter the volume level.

BlueAnt X3i colours
Along with the hardware improvements, you can also choose from Slate Black, Crimson Red, or Ocean Blue colours.

“I think people have come to expect that full volume in a Bluetooth speaker brings with it a downside of distortion, or that we’d compromise on sound or volume output to make this affordable,” Maddern said. “We’ve worked hard to make that a thing of the past with the X3i. And the hard work has paid off.”

Available now through Telstra Stores and the brand’s official website, you can get the BlueAnt X3i in Slate Black, Crimson Red, or Ocean Blue. My pick of the bunch is Ocean Blue, as I’m drawn to bright colours like a moth to a flame.

At $249, the speaker sits alongside other portable Bluetooth speakers like the Bose SoundLink Flex, and Ultimate Ears Boom 3, while offering a cheaper alternative to the Sonos Roam.
