Copping it from all angles, Apple recently defended itself against xAI founder Elon Musk’s accusations that the App Store rankings warrant an “antitrust violation”.
Musk claimed on social media platform X that “Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation.”
Threatening legal action, he didn’t provide any evidence to back up his claims, leading X users to respond that both DeepSeek and Perplexity have topped the App Store in various regions since OpenAI and Apple partnered up to work on ChatGPT integrations.
Fresh from an anticompetitive ruling in an Australian federal court, an Apple spokesperson told Bloomberg that its App Store “is designed to be fair and free of bias”.
“We feature thousands of apps through charts, algorithmic recommendations and curated lists selected by experts using objective criteria. Our goal is to offer safe discovery for users and valuable opportunities for developers, collaborating with many to increase app visibility in rapidly evolving categories.”
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also weighed in on Musk’s “remarkable claim” and fired back with an allegation of his own.
“This is a remarkable claim given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn’t like,” Altman posted to X.
At the time of writing, ChatGPT is listed as the top free app on the Australian App Store for iPhones, while Grok by xAI is 13th, followed by X in 130th.
