Gigabyte AORUS MASTER 16 GEN 2 review: Game on

Gigabyte AORUS MASTER 16 GEN 2 review: Game on

9

Packing tons of grunt and a professional-grade display, the Gigabyte AORUS MASTER 16 GEN 2 notebook is for serious gamers or high-end content creators looking to make it big.

Laptops generally aspire to be ever thinner and lighter, but there’s still demand for high-end workhorses that focus more on power than portability. Once dubbed a ‘desktop replacement’ or ‘portable workstation’, such bulky beasts are designed to let you work or play away from your desk with minimal compromises.

So it is with Gigabyte’s AORUS MASTER notebook range, combining serious graphics performance with a gorgeous OLED display to create a relatively portable powerhouse.

First impressions

At 2.3 kg, the Gigabyte AORUS MASTER 16 GEN 2 certainly has some heft as you lift it from the box, but the chassis is surprisingly slender considering what lies within.

The slim 19mm black magnesium-aluminium body gives it an understated and elegant look, offset by the AORUS logo and LED strip glowing on the back. That’s impressive considering it’s actually the world’s slimmest gaming laptop that runs AMD’s flagship Ryzen 9 9955HX3D mobile processor.

Don’t forget to allow for the hefty 330-watt power brick and AC cable, which add about another 800 gm to your carry bag.

One key enhancement compared to the previous model is improved HDR certification for the gorgeous OLED display. It’s still a 16-inch, 16:10 aspect ratio panel, offering 2560×1600-pixel resolution.

Fire up the MASTER 16 GEN 2, and you’ve got OLED’s amazing 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio to ensure plenty of detail in the brightest highlights and darkest shadows. The brightness has doubled from 500 to 1000 nits, earning it VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1000 certification (up from True Black 500).

Some content creators will lament the fact it’s not full 4K resolution, while others might be disappointed that it’s not a touchscreen and doesn’t come with a stylus.

Below the display, the three-zone RGB backlit keyboard is controlled by G-Mate software, by default white in productivity mode and full RGB in gaming mode. The chiclet keys are well-spaced and offer decent travel, although the keyboard is a bit spongy in the middle. To be fair, it’s not aimed at wordsmiths, who might also be put off by the hideous futuristic font used on the keys.

Below the keyboard is a large, centre-aligned glass touchpad which lacks haptic feedback.

Features

The Gigabyte AORUS MASTER 16 GEN 2’s relatively slender design leaves room not only for ample cooling vents, but also a generous spread of ports.

For starters, you’ve got two Type-A USB3.2 Gen2 ports, along with a Type-C USB3.2 port and Type-C USB4 port which both support DisplayPort 2.0 and Power Delivery 3.0.

You’ll also find an HDMI 2.1 video port, a mic and headphone combo audio jack, a microSD slot and a Gigabit Ethernet port.

The exact review model is Gigabyte AORUS MASTER 16 GEN 2 AM6J. To be more precise, it’s the $6,599 AM6 ‘Z’ J, with the 6ZJ packing the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU endowed with 24GB GDDR7. There’s also a $3,999 6XJ and $5,099 6YJ, packing the GeForce RTX 5070Ti and 5080 respectively.

Interestingly, this year Gigabyte has switched the AM6J range across to AMD Ryzen 9 power plants, after relying on the Intel Core Ultra 9 in 2025’s AM6H range. In return, this new AM6J range is a bit thinner and lighter than its predecessors but packs more of a punch.

The 6ZJ and the 6YJ are blessed with the AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX3D, which features AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology – stacking additional L3 cache directly onto the CPU to reduce latency and help with frame rates. The 6XJ steps down to the AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX, which only utilises 64MB of standard L3 cache.

Lots of grunt crammed into a slim design naturally creates heat challenges, which the Master 16 GEN 2 combats with quad-fan WINDFORCE Infinity EX Cooling Technology, reducing the need for thermal throttling when the notebook is working hard.

Along with advanced cooling, Gigabyte’s AI-powered GiMATE optimises the system on the fly. It can adjust GPU overclocking to boost performance, as well as CPU usage to save energy and battery life, lower temperature, and reduce fan noise.

Content creators will appreciate the inclusion of GiMATE Creator and GiMATE Coder on-device AI. These connect to the Hugging Face AI community, allowing you to download validated LLM models directly to your laptop.

Quality

The Gigabyte AORUS MASTER 16 GEN 2 doesn’t disappoint when it comes to grunt, with the AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX3D delivering very respectable GeekBench 6 CPU scores of 3,158 single-core and 14,737 multi-core. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 saw it score 5,549 on GPU OpenCL testing.

Those results are when running on batteries, with power mode set to Best Performance, Windows Game Mode on and AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition set to Performance.

Plug the notebook into the wall and things hot up, both metaphorically and literally.

The single-core result remains about the same, but multi-core leaps to 19,710 and GPU OpenCL to an impressive 231,279 – rivalling high-end desktops. This boost is because on AC power the system enables gGPU, meaning it hands more CPU tasks across to the GPU. The fan noise understandably cranks up; it’s tolerable at first but reaches jet engine status after a while.

Of course, you pay for all that grunt when it comes to battery life. You’ll typically get around three to four hours of light usage, but of course this beast is made to be wild, not mild.

The battery life is halved if you’re really pushing the notebook in performance mode, so you probably can’t leave that chunky power brick at home.

When it comes to multimedia, the OLED screen is stunning, capable of handling Netflix Dolby Vision. The speakers are very good, but don’t quite do the picture justice. They’re impressive for a laptop – crisp and clear with minimal distortion – but are found wanting in the low-end compared to what you’ll get from something like a 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Who is the Gigabyte AORUS MASTER 16 GEN 2 for?

The Gigabyte AORUS MASTER 16 GEN 2 is an absolute beast. The question is not whether it’s any good, but whether it’s the right fit for your needs and whether you can justify that hefty $6,599 price tag.

If you can’t afford to compromise on portable performance for work and/or play and your budget will stretch, the AM6J certainly won’t disappoint.
