Are you looking for that sweet spot between something cheap and the top priced flagships? With fantastic displays, long battery life and multi-lens cameras, these phones are amongst the best of the best without splurging over $1000.
Google Pixel 6
Rating: 8.1 Price: $999
The Google Pixel 6 is Google’s best effort to date. It is streets ahead of the Pixel 5 series in speed and camera performance. It is a worthy flagship, and the more you use it, the more features you discover.
Positives | Negatives |
---|---|
Exceptional build quality and unique Google design cues | Throttling is more than expected and will be a deal breaker for power users |
IP68 and Qi charge | Limited USB-C 3.1 implementation – no ALT DP or external storage mounting |
Great camera but needs a little work on the camera app | Average selfie camera |
Good daylight readable displays | |
Android 12, 12, 13, 14… |
Motorola Edge 20 Pro 5G
Rating: 8.7 Price: $899
Motorola just levelled the playing field. It competes well with OPPO, Vivo, Realme and Samsung in this space. Including a great (although not yet perfect) camera, solid battery life, excellent phone reception and support from Motorola Australia. If you have $899 to spend, it gets the tick.
Positives | Negatives |
---|---|
Great 6.7” 144Hz AMOLED screen | Mono – use headphones instead |
Solid Qualcomm SD870G performance | IP52 is not enough |
Good battery life | Does not support Optus 5G Low-band n40 |
Good all-around camera | |
Two Android Upgrade policy | |
Very strong phone signal strength |
Samsung A52 4G/5G
Rating: 8.7 Price: $599/$749
The Samsung Galaxy A52 4G or 5G are serious contenders in the highly competitive mid-range 4G and 5G market. They should be on your shopping list. The problem for Samsung is that other companies are the class leaders in some areas of that space. But, if you want AMOLED and IP67, then these are for you.
4G or 5G? The 5G uses a slightly more powerful SoC and has more storage – both have a microSD hybrid slot to 1TB. But that is about where it ends. If you only need 4G, save $150.
Positives | Negatives |
---|---|
Decent 2-day battery life | 15W charger supplied |
Good day and office light camera | Not the fastest implementation of this SoC |
Samsung OS upgrade and security patch policy | Poor colour matching between 12MP Ultra Wide and Main 64MP sensor |
Gaming is too variable – go for an SD8XX series SoC | |
Sound signature is tinny |
OPPO Find X3 Lite 5G
Rating: 9 Price: $749
The OPPO Find X3 Lite has the lowest cost of all the Find X3 series and holds its own against similarly priced mid-range 5G phones. It gets extra points for SuperVOOC 2.0 charging, a better camera than you could expect and OPPOs unswerving commitment to its users to provide excellent after-sales service
Positives | Negatives |
---|---|
Great grippy textured finish | No formal IP rating or microSD |
Bright and colour accurate screen | Oversized charger takes up two power point spaces |
Killer battery life and recharge time | |
Camera is as good as it gets for the price |
Motorola Edge 20 5G
Rating: 8.8 Price: $699
Hold on, isn’t the Motorola Edge 20 already on this list? The Pro version is, but we are talking about the younger sibling here! This device focuses on what is important and addresses these pain points very well. It also includes class-leading features like a 108MP camera at a low $699 price – you would pay more to get this.
Positives | Negatives |
---|---|
Great 6.7” 144Hz AMOLED screen | Mono – use headphones instead |
Solid SD 778G SoC performance | IP52 is not enough |
Good battery life | |
Good all-around camera | |
Android x 2 Upgrade policy | |
Strong phone signal strength |
