Dyson has launched what it claims to be its most powerful cordless vacuum cleaner yet, the Dyson Gen5detect, designed to be smaller and faster than its predecessor.
“The Gen5detect defines Dyson’s next generation of cleaning technology,” said James Dyson, the company’s founder and Chief Engineer. “It is the combination of our dust light optic technology, dust particle counting and sizing, pioneering new motor and whole-machine HEPA filtration, that enables you to achieve our deepest ever clean.”
As its name suggests, the Dyson Gen5detect uses a fifth generation Hyperdymium motor, providing a suction power rated at 262 air watts. It spins at up to 135,000rpm, which Dyson says is up to nine times faster than the engine on an F1 car. This power is intended to make vacuuming microscopic particles easier across a range of surfaces and hard-to-reach crevices.
Also included in the vacuum is a whole-machine HEPA filtration system made to capture 99.99% of particles – down to 0.1 microns, to be precise. HEPA refers to High Efficiency Particulate Air, a filter efficiency standard designed to remove small particles such as dust, pollen, and bacteria.
One of the Dyson Gen5detect’s other main draws is its newly re-designed Fluffy Optic cleaner head. Originally introduced in 2021, this technology produced a light to illuminate hard-to-see particles on hard floors so you can more easily vacuum them up. Now, the upgraded Fluffy Optic cleaner head projects a blade of light with twice the brightness of the previous design, covering more of your floor.
Even the user interface has had a makeover with the Dyson Gen5detect. Arguably the most impressive aspect of the new UI is the real-time cleanliness indicator. Through acoustic sensing, the vacuum can track particle sizes, and the device’s LCD screen will show you if an area’s clean or needs more attention.
Other features include an inbuilt dusting and crevice tool, a single power button for operation, up to 70 minutes of suction when used in Eco mode on hard floors, and a simple emptying mechanism. Available today from Dyson online stores and Dyson Demo stores, the Dyson Gen5detect cordless vacuum cleaner costs $1,499.
With more power than previous models and improved features across the board, Dyson’s latest vacuum looks impressive on paper. My biggest question for any cleaner boils down to one thing: how will it tackle pet fur? Only time will tell.
