AMD’s Radeon RX 7600 graphics card costs less than $500

AMD recently announced its latest graphics card, the Radeon RX 7600, taking aim at the competing Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU’s gaming performance.

Built to handle 1080p gaming and content creation, the Radeon RX 7600 has 8GB of GDDR6 memory and uses the AMD RDNA 3 architecture to power its ray tracing and AI acceleration technology. Along with the announcement, AMD made mention of its faster performance when compared to Nvidia’s RTX 3060. As the RTX 4060 has only just launched, the company didn’t provide any benchmark comparisons of the more recent card.

To reflect its status as a 1080p gaming component, the Radeon RX 7600 costs less than $500 in Australia. While it’s not as cheap as some entry-level GPUs from a few years ago, it’s far more affordable than cards that target 1440p and above, like the RTX 4070.

AMD Radeon RX 7600 details and specifications

Despite advancements towards 4K and 1440p displays, Full HD is still how the majority of people play PC games. AMD referenced April 2023 data from the Steam Hardware Survey to back this up, explaining that many people still use older hardware, which is why 1080p GPUs still have an important role to fill.

“Currently, 65% of gamers surveyed are playing at 1080p and the majority are still using older graphics cards, unable to take advantage of the latest performance- and visual-enhancing features that deliver the best gaming experiences,” said Scott Herkelman, senior vice president and general manager, Graphics Business Unit at AMD.

Depending on how old some users’ graphics cards are, ray tracing is one benefit recent GPUs provide. This refers to how light is portrayed in games, and devices with ray tracing capabilities produce more realistic reflections and lighting effects.

In the official Radeon RX 7600 announcement, AMD provided several measures to illustrate the card’s performance. For one, the new GPU reportedly generates higher benchmarks than the RX 6600 across media editing software like Da Vinci Resolve, Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro.

When gaming, AMD claims average 1080p performance increases of 29% and 34% over the RX 6600 and Nvidia RTX 3060 respectively. The RX 7600 also supports over 100 frames per second (FPS) across popular competitive games, in addition to supporting 60 FPS on recent high-demand games like the Resident Evil 4 remake, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and The Last of Us Part I.

It’s out now from PC hardware vendors for around $459 locally. Early reviews seem positive, with PC Mag labelling AMD’s latest GPU an “excellent graphics card” as long as you adhere to its 1080p limitations.
