We’ll see Samsung’s new foldable devices next month at a Galaxy Unpacked event towards the end of July, according to a recent announcement from the company.
After years of hosting Unpacked events in cities across the world since 2010, the upcoming edition will take place in Seoul, South Korea for the first time, where Samsung is based. More precisely, it will be held at COEX in Samseong-dong, Gangnam, as it’s said to be a converging point of technology culture and history.
The July Galaxy Unpacked will be Samsung’s 27th iteration of the event following the reveal of the Galaxy S23 devices earlier in the year. According to TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, the focus on foldables aligns with the South Korean setting.
“The foldable category embodies Samsung’s philosophy of delivering innovation that pushes boundaries to reshape the future of mobile experiences,” Roh said. “Hosting Unpacked in Seoul holds great significance both as it is a city that has become an emerging epicentre of innovation and culture as well as the foldable category.”
July Galaxy Unpacked: will it be the Fold 5 and Flip 5?
Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4 phones last year, so it’s widely expected to reveal the latest versions next month. Foldable devices have been part of Samsung’s lineup since the original Fold in 2019. According to research quoted by the company, the emerging form factor is increasing in popularity, with a 13.6 per cent foldable phone adoption rate in Korea.
Since the initial Galaxy Z Fold, Samsung has faced strong competition from Motorola and Oppo, mostly in the clamshell flip phone stakes. At the moment, it’s something of a foldable arms race, with manufacturers pushing the limits further in terms of battery life and external display size. For a brief moment, Oppo held the crown of the largest cover screen with the Find N2 Flip’s 3.26-inch display, before being eclipsed by the upcoming Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, which has a 3.6-inch external display. Oppo still has the best battery at 4,300mAh.
In Australia, there’s less competition in the more book-like foldable space occupied by the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Oppo hasn’t brought its Find N2 phone locally, indicative of the industry’s broader focus on the clamshell flip design.
As for what exactly to expect from Samsung at its Galaxy Unpacked in July, there are plenty of rumours. Many of them suggest incremental upgrades for its foldable devices, including an expanded cover display. Although it will be tough to top Motorola’s efforts with the Razr 40 Ultra, we’re interested to see what Samsung brings to the table. We’ll let you know more details, including a specific date for the Galaxy Unpacked event, as soon as we get them. Stay tuned to Samsung’s website in the meantime.
