Your fridge will get annual software updates, just like a phone

Your fridge will get annual software updates, just like a phone

You know how your phone gets annual software updates for several years, adding new features and bolstering device security? That same level of support is now coming to several home appliances as part of Samsung’s One UI ecosystem.

Announced at IFA in Berlin over the weekend, Samsung is bringing One UI to specific fridges and washing machines, along with a commitment to seven years of software updates, just like the brand’s Galaxy phones.

One UI is the software platform Samsung uses across its phones and TVs, with the announcement set to bring some Wi-Fi-connected home appliances into the fold.

As part of the One UI expansion, various 2024 appliances will get a software update by the end of September. It’ll give screen-equipped appliances a user interface refresh and various new features.

One example shared by Samsung included the integration of its AI Vision platform across some Family Hub appliances. As a result, some fridges will recognise “frequently used packaged foods” while being able to identify more fresh foods.

Samsung mentioned that the Now Brief feature it added with One UI 7 in January, will be a core part of the interconnected appliance ecosystem. On top of calendar items and weather details, the AI-driven day-at-a-glance feature will also include recipe details and the status of the washing machine.

As described by Samsung’s Jeong Seung Moon, the broader One UI support is meant to ensure “the experience feels natural and familiar across all our devices”.

How the expanded smart home platform works in real-world conditions will be a big part of whether Samsung’s plans catch on. Integrated AI features like Google’s Magic Cue haven’t worked at launch, so the pressure is on to execute.

Valens Quinn attended IFA 2025 with the support of Anker, Aqara, Dreame, Ecovacs, Reolink, Roborock, and Samsung.
