Following up on one of Australia’s best-selling mirrorless cameras, the Canon EOS R6 Mark III ramps up the resolution and smarts over its predecessor.
Made primarily for still photography but equipped with modern video features, the $4,299 EOS R6 Mark III sports a 32.5-megapixel full frame CMOS sensor, up from the Mark II’s 24MP sensor. As a result, the maximum ISO level drops down to 64,000 (the Mk II supported up to 102,400), which the higher resolution is meant to offset.
Canon also says the Mark III camera benefits from upgraded auto-focus and subject tracking, suited to snapping fast-moving objects. Supporting that action-friendly software upgrade is continuous shooting of up to 40 frames per second in RAW, JPG and HEIF formats.
If you’re too slow on the shutter, the pre-continuous shooting feature trickling down from the pricier Canon EOS R5 Mark II might help you out. Capable of shooting 20 frames — or half a second in video mode — before pressing the shutter, the EOS R6 Mark III can still capture moments if you’re slightly too slow on the draw.
Like Canon’s EOS C50 cinema camera, the R6 Mark III can also film in up to 7K resolution using an open gate format. It means the camera can record using the whole sensor’s height and width, which provides a lot of post-production flexibility. Want a traditional 16:9 widescreen shot for YouTube? Just crop the footage accordingly. Ditto for editing a vertical clip for social media.
Joining Canon’s latest camera is the $699 RF 45mm f/1.2 STM lens. It’s a fast bit of glass that’s also the brand’s lightest f/1.2 RF lens, weighing under 350g. There’s also an EOS R6 Mark III bundle that includes the RF 24-105mm f4/L IS USM kit lens for $6,149 all up.
Keep an eye on Canon’s website for the official launch in Australia later this month.
