Snapchat is the latest social media platform to roll out age verification ahead of the Australian government’s youth social media ban.
Starting this week, Snapchat users who are believed to be below the age of 16 will receive notifications about age verification. This includes users who have previously designated their age in-app, or those that Snapchat estimates to be underage.
Users will then be instructed to officially verify their age via either ConnectID, scanning a form of photo ID, or taking a selfie for an age estimation check. People younger than 16 won’t be able to access Snapchat once the youth social media ban begins on 10 December.
Snapchat executives have previously publicly disagreed with its designation as an ‘age-restricted social media platform’. A spokesperson recently added that the company is “deeply saddened” that young Australians won’t be able to communicate via its platform.
