Sony LinkBuds – A wildly fresh take on true wireless earbuds (review)

In a market saturated with wireless earbuds, you have to do something pretty different to stand out. Cue the LinkBuds from Sony, which boast a unique open ring design that puts a literal hole in the middle of the driver, leaving your ear canals free to hear your environment while you enjoy music and take calls. They also happen to be one of the smallest earbuds to date with a rather ingenious control system for adjusting music playback. So how do they fare?

LinkBuds design and comfort  

Sony’s design choices centre around making a pair of in-ear wireless buds that don’t block you off from the outside world while also being comfortable enough to wear all day. 

Wireless earbuds typically come in two different flavours: ‘AirPods-style’ with protruding stems or ‘button-style’ with rounded, self-contained housings. Both seal your ear canal with silicone or foam tips and some provide active noise cancellation to block out your surroundings.

The LinkBuds don’t adhere to any of those conventions. Instead Sony has opted for a unique figure eight design consisting of a ring shaped driver that sits next to your ear canal with the larger spherical housing placed higher up against your cartilage. This is all held in place by rubber fins. The ring driver means your ear canal is never blocked or sealed, allowing sound from the outside world to come through naturally. 

LinkBuds are an all plastic affair, with each earbud weighing only 4 grams. Sony includes five different sizes of fins in the box and it might take a bit of trial and error before you find the right size. 

In my case, I found the ‘extra small’ was the most comfortable for my left ear while going up to the ‘small’ size worked best for my right ear. The nice thing is that unlike some other open back wireless earbuds, LinkBuds have a reasonably sized sweet spot so you don’t have to worry about the sound quality getting destroyed when making micro adjustments in your ears.

As is the case with any earbuds, the comfort and fit will vary from person to person. Most earbuds that I’ve tested either don’t stay in my ears or get uncomfortable after an hour or two. LinkBuds are not only the most comfortable pair of earbuds I’ve tried to date but they also stayed in my ears regardless of whether I was running or chewing food. 

I was less than impressed with the case design which is next to impossible to open with one hand and is bulkier than the AirPods case, causing it to stick out more in my jeans pocket.

Sound and mic quality 

Despite coming in at almost half the size and weight of Sony’s impressive ANC enabled earbuds, the WF-1000XM4’s, LinkBuds still manage to squeeze in drivers that are almost double the size. So how do they sound? 

LinkBuds come with all the benefits and drawbacks that normally come with open-back designs. You get a more airy and wider soundstage with a greater sense of separation between instruments and vocals. The clarity and detail is solid with an energetic sound signature and the unsealed design of the LinkBuds means minimal ear fatigue either. You even have access to a customisable equaliser via Sony’s Headphones app. 

However, this all comes at the cost of bass, with the LinkBuds being almost devoid of any low-end response. Whether you’re listening to Hip-Hop, R&B or EDM, the sub-bass is more implied than delivered, which is a real shame. 

The open design also means that anything higher than 50 percent volume will be audible to others around you. Also, as the LinkBuds let in more outside noise, I did need to increase the volume levels beyond what I would normally listen to, especially when outdoors with traffic zooming by. 

There is an ‘adaptive volume control’ feature that will attempt to adjust the volume automatically based on your surroundings but I found it to be a bit too temperamental in practice. LinkBuds also come with a speak to chat feature which can automatically pause your music for a short interval whenever the earbuds detect that you’re talking. It works really well and you can customise the length of the pause via Sony’s Headphones app. 

Voice call quality is surprisingly good, with Zoom calls and regular voice calls sounding better than the pricier 1000XM4’s and on par with Apple’s AirPods.

Connectivity and features 

Connectivity comes courtesy of Bluetooth 5.2. Android users can take advantage of Fast Pair for rapid connections with their devices, and the same goes for Windows users via Swift Pair. Unfortunately, the LinkBuds lack multipoint support so you’re still limited to one Bluetooth connection at a time. 

The connectivity was mostly good but I found the range to be shorter than some other wireless earbuds such as Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Pro and Apple’s AirPods. 

The LinkBuds uses a clever control system where instead of tapping on the earpieces themselves, you simply tap gently on the side of your face to pause music, change tracks and adjust the volume. Single taps do nothing, presumably to prevent false gestures so you’ll mostly be limited to double and triple taps. 

Although somewhat awkward at first, tapping my sideburns to control music and answer phone calls soon felt natural with the LinkBuds responding quickly and accurately.

Battery life 

The battery life of the LinkBuds tops out at 17.5 hours – that’s 5.5 hours from the earbuds and a further 12 hours from the charging case. Having certain features enabled such as Sony’s DSEE, which improves the sound quality of highly compressed audio files, will deplete the battery even quicker. 

That’s a little disappointing for something that’s designed to be worn all day, but a fairly standard runtime for a pair of truly wireless earbuds. There’s support for fast charging, with a ten minute charge giving you 1.5 hours of playback, however, there’s no wireless charging, which is a notable omission at this price point. 

GadgetGuy’s take 

Sony’s LinkBuds represent a fresh take in a category overrun with options. If you don’t like the sealed and compressed feel you get with traditional wireless earbuds and if fit and comfort are important to you, then the LinkBuds should be at the top of your list. The unique open design of the LinkBuds means they let in more outside noise, making it ideal for when you need to be connected with what’s going on around you, such as in an office or while running outdoors. 

However, the anaemic bass response is likely to put a lot of people off and the noticeable sound leakage may irritate anyone in your immediate vicinity. The lack of any active or passive noise cancellation also makes it an unsuitable option for travel, particularly on planes where the engine noise will drown the LinkBuds audio out completely. 

Coupled with a high price tag of $319 as well as the fact that better sounding and more feature rich alternatives can be had for less, the LinkBuds’s have a fairly narrow, specialist appeal.

Affordable Nokia G21 smartphone launches with new features

The latest Nokia G-series budget smartphone offering from HMD Global is here, with the Australian release of the 4G-compatible Nokia G21.

Available now in Vodafone Australia stores on Pre-Paid in Blue starting at $199, the Android 12 handset boasts a three-day battery life, three years of security updates, and a three-year manufacturer’s warranty. For the first time for a Nokia G-series phone, the Nokia G21 includes ‘Mask Mode’ so you can still unlock your device with your face while wearing a mask.

An added benefit beyond the three-day battery life is the new Super Battery Saver mode, designed to get even more out of the phone. This feature, which can be enabled at any time, allows you to choose where to save energy use and prolong how long a charge lasts. When the time to recharge arrives, the Nokia G21 supports 18W fast charging.

Another improvement added to the Nokia G21 is an upgraded 1600 x 720 screen, supporting a 90Hz refresh rate – another first for the G-series. This means smoother motion while scrolling and browsing the 6.5-inch display.

On the back, the Nokia G21 has a 50MP triple-lens camera to help snap detailed photos regardless of the available light. Its 8MP front-facing camera uses AI technology to produce enough light and clarity for selfies in low light situations. Additionally, AI Super Resolution is made for increasing the quality of your photos while using the phone’s digital zoom.

Available in Nordic Blue, the Nokia G21 features a new design made from polycarbonate, which is thinner and more ergonomic than previous models, only weighing 190 grams. Out of the box, the phone comes pre-installed with music streaming service Spotify and ExpressVPN, the latter of which offers a 30-day free trial with all new Nokia smartphones.

At an attractive budget price, the Nokia G21 appears to be a reasonable option for anyone wanting a no-fuss smartphone with robust features. If you want to purchase it outright and use the phone with another telco, stores like Big W and JB Hi-Fi also stock the Nokia G21 for around $299.

ASUS goes all-in on its 2022 Zenbook, Vivobook and ROG range of laptops

Over the past week, Taiwanese tech company ASUS has unveiled its latest laptops, ranging from the versatile Zenbook and Vivobook lines to the high-performance ROG gaming products.

Beginning with the Zenbook laptops, ASUS revealed the Zenbook Pro and Zenbook S series of laptops powered by 12th Gen Intel Core H-Series or AMD Ryzen 6000 H-Series processors, in addition to the graphical grunt of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 Series of laptop GPUs. 

At the top of the Zenbook Pro range is the Zenbook Pro 16X OLED, a 16-inch laptop featuring a 16:10 4K OLED 60Hz touchscreen display with HDR support at 550-nit peak brightness. It offers up to an RTX 3060 laptop GPU, making it a powerful option for creatives. Alongside an internal upgrade to the Zenbook Pro 15 Duo OLED, there is also the new Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED, a 14.5-inch laptop with a secondary inbuilt 12.7-inch ScreenPad touch display. While not 4K, instead opting for a 2.8K display, the Zenbook Pro 14 Duo does support a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth motion.

For users who prefer a more flexible laptop, the Zenbook Pro 15 Flip OLED features 360-degree hinges, so you can flip the display over for use in a tablet-like configuration. It’s a little less powerful than its counterparts, with an Intel Arc A370M discrete graphics processor instead of the GeForce GPU series. Rounding out the Zenbook Pro range is the Zenbook Pro 17, the first 17.3-inch Zenbook ASUS has produced. Its 165Hz refresh rate makes it the smoothest display of the lot, plus it runs on the AMD Ryzen 9 6000 series CPU and can be fitted with an RTX 3050 laptop GPU.

On the slim and lightweight laptop front, ASUS showed off the Zenbook S series, starting with the versatile Zenbook S 13 Flip OLED. The flippable hybrid device runs on up to a 12th Gen Intel Core i7 CPU, includes the onboard Iris Xe graphics processor, and has a 2.8K display. The non-flip version, the Zenbook S 13 OLED is what ASUS claims to be the world’s lightest 13.3-inch laptop at just one kilogram. Also featuring a 2.8K display, the Zenbook S 13 OLED includes up to an AMD Ryzen 7 6800U CPU alongside an AMD Radeon 680M GPU.

These new Zenbooks sit alongside the available Vivobook range of OLED display laptops led by the Vivobook Pro 16X OLED, a more direct Macbook competitor running on up to an Intel Core i9 CPU plus an RTX 3070 Ti laptop GPU.

Also recently announced by ASUS were the latest additions to its Republic of Gamers (ROG) range of gaming laptops. First was the ROG Strix SCAR 17 Special Edition laptop, coming with two 17.3-inch IPS display options: a 1080p 360Hz panel, or a 1440p 240Hz variant. Powered by the 12th Gen Intel Core i9-12950HX processor, the ROG Strix SCAR 17 SE can have up to an RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU and 64GB DDR5 4800MHz RAM for high-powered gaming sessions.

Additionally, ASUS highlighted the ROG Flow X16, a hybrid laptop running on an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS CPU and RTX 3070 Ti laptop GPU. It also features a bright 1100-nit 1440p 165Hz mini LED or IPS display and the same RAM options as the Strix SCAR 17 SE. For added customisation, the ROG Flow X16 also supports XG Mobile external GPUs if you need more than the already-decent internal graphics card.

There is no shortage of portable PC options with the latest ASUS laptops, although local release timings and pricing details are conspicuously absent. Expect to see more details closer to each device’s launch sometime in 2022.

YouTube Shorts embodies TikTok with more video remix features

YouTube has recently expanded its short form TikTok-like platform, YouTube Shorts, so that creators can now include visual snippets from public YouTube videos as part of their content.

This added feature has been likened to the Stitch function on TikTok, where users can natively clip other videos into their own creations, adding to the popular audio-only Duet feature. Last year, YouTube added the ability to remix creators’ audio into your own Shorts, meaning the recent inclusion of video follows the trend set by TikTok. Much like the popular TikTok features, YouTube’s additions function in an almost identical way, right down to the maximum five-second clip limitation.

Available soon for YouTube iOS users and Android later in the year, you’ll be able to include clips of other videos in Shorts by following a similar method to sampling audio. Once you find a publicly-listed YouTube video you want to include, tap Create below the video’s title followed by Cut, which lets you choose the section you want. For Shorts you want to remix, tap the three dots and then Cut. Like TikTok, remixed videos will be credited in the end result so viewers can check out the source.

However, there are some safeguards to prevent anyone’s content from being remixed. YouTube creators can opt out of having their regular videos sampled by disabling the feature within YouTube Studio. Shorts, on the other hand, do not currently have the same opt-out capacity as the longer-form videos. Instead, if you do not want someone sampling a Short you’ve made, the only current option is deletion, which then removes it from any content that sampled it.

It’s not surprising YouTube is continuing to follow the trends set by TikTok. The latter’s popularity among younger demographics is envied by other platforms, as seen by Instagram adding Reels in recent years, followed by YouTube Shorts. One area YouTube will need to catch up on is its opt-out settings; TikTok users can opt-out of sampling on a per-video basis, while YouTube only offers this for standard videos, not Shorts, bizarrely enough.

Razer pivots from gaming with Tensorbook Linux laptop for AI research

Razer has made a name for itself by making high-end gaming products, including powerful laptops and peripherals, but the company’s latest laptop, dubbed Tensorbook, is aimed at machine learning researchers needing serious computing power.

The laptop is a collaboration between Razer and deep learning company Lambda intended for laboratory use by those researching machine learning and artificial intelligence. It’s essentially a revised version of 2021’s Razer Blade 15 Advanced laptop running on Linux OS Ubuntu 20.04.

More than just a Linux machine, the Tensorbook has an eight-core 11th Gen Intel i7 chip, an Nvidia RTX 3080 16GB Max-Q graphics card, and a massive 64GB of RAM. It also features a 15.6-inch 165Hz 1440p display, two 1TB SSD drives, and all the ports under the sun. Alongside the Ubuntu OS, the Tensorbook also comes preinstalled with the Lambda Stack, including various compute software such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, CUDA, and cuDNN. Needless to say, it’s a powerful laptop.

For those intrigued by how much the Tensorbook costs, the base model with just Ubuntu installed and a base one-year warranty is available overseas for approximately $4,950. Meanwhile, the most expensive model which comes with three years of Lambda Premium Support and dual boot capacity with Windows 10 Pro costs roughly $7,100.

According to Lambda, the Tensorbook is an “all-in-one deep learning solution” offering researchers a dedicated GPU laptop so they’re not entirely reliant on cloud computing. Institutions using Lambda infrastructure work on various projects, such as training neural networks to detect cancer, and autonomous vehicles.

Due to being hardware aimed at a very specific market, the Tensorbook is currently only available through the Lambda website, so we don’t know if it will get a local release. On paper, it’s an impressive piece of kit that promises to make an impact on all manner of research.
