The Suunto 9 Peak Pro GPS sports watch has battery life for (literally) days

Fitness fanatics have a new tracking option with the Suunto 9 Peak Pro, a GPS multisport watch with an impressive battery life.

Suunto labels the 9 Peak Pro as its most powerful GPS sports watch to date off the back of a new and improved chipset, boosting its performance and precision. It’s capable of connecting with up to four satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, BEIDOU), and up to 32 individual satellites at the same time, keeping you connected regardless of location. All of this housed within a 10.8mm-thick device; its toughness belies its thin form factor. GadgetGuy contributor Adam Turner reviewed the previous 9 Peak sports watch, labelling it “a serious sports watch for people on the move [that] shines when the going gets tough.”

Arguably the main attraction here is the battery life. No one wants to see a low-battery notification mid-workout, something Suunto appears to take seriously. For daily general use, the Suunto 9 Peak Pro is tested to last for 21 days without recharging. Naturally, this figure changes depending on how often you use resource-intensive features. There are three battery modes that correspond to different scenarios and drain the battery at various rates. Firstly, Performance mode lasts 40 hours, Endurance mode takes a longer 70 hours, while Tour mode provides 300 hours of continuous use. Plus, the battery only takes an hour to fully recharge.

New features that come with the watch include modes for watersport enthusiasts. Both snorkelling and mermaiding are new modes that track your depth, dive time, and water temperature as deep as 10 metres underwater. Alongside the Suunto app, watch users can also now plan workouts in advance and follow it throughout a session. Included in the app are route-finding options, live guidance, and training tools. It also provides heat maps, 3D maps, and road surface map layers so you can meticulously plan a run.

Available in six different versions – four stainless steel options and two titanium models – the Suunto 9 Peak Pro is now available at the company’s online store, Bing Lee, The Good Guys, and Find Your Feet. At retail, the stainless steel versions cost $759.99, and the more expensive titanium variant is $959.99.

While purchased by Liesheng, a Chinese technology company, earlier this year, Suunto watches will continue to be manufactured in Finland, still boast being the only smartwatch maker that uses 100 percent wind power.

Clearly aimed at those who take fitness seriously, the Suunto 9 Peak Pro promises to be a worthwhile option. Its long battery life looks attractive, as does the slick design. Watch this space for our full review of the Suunto 9 Peak Pro.
