Elden Ring wins Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2022

Elden Ring has taken out Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2022 ceremony, beating several strong contenders in the process.

Up against fellow Game of the Year nominees God of War Ragnarok, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Horizon Forbidden West, Stray, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3, the game made by Japanese studio FromSoftware won the biggest award of the night.

Voted on by over 100 media outlets and influencers, The Game Awards showcases the best of the video game industry alongside announcements of upcoming titles. Awards at the ceremony encompass many categories such as specific development disciplines and game genres. As described on the event’s website, Game of the Year “recognises a game that delivers the absolute best experience across all creative and technical fields”.

Elden Ring launched on 25 February 2023 to widespread critical acclaim. On the review aggregation website Metacritic, the game holds a rating of 96, making it one of the best-reviewed games of all time. GamesHub editor Edmond Tran wrote a glowing review about the open world RPG.

Elden Ring’s challenges are as imposing and satisfying to overcome as ever, but there’s also a degree of hope woven into the fabric of the game’s design, one that encourages you to explore widely in a beautiful, awe-inspiring landscape,” Tran wrote. “Elden Ring is an exceptional, accomplished work that realises a fantasy world of solemnity, beauty, and menacing uncertainty you can’t help but lose yourself in.”

What is Elden Ring about?

Set in a fantasy world known as the Lands Between, you play as a character referred to as a “Tarnished”, an exile destined to repair the broken Elden Ring. As with many fantasy settings, there are lots of proper nouns and unique vocabulary to comprehend. An action-roleplaying game, it has you explore this world littered with all manner of beasts, fight epic bosses, and grow in power to overcome its mighty challenge.

FromSoftware’s latest game follows in the footsteps of its previous titles, Bloodborne and the Dark Souls series, collectively known as “Soulsborne” games. They’re typified by their unrelenting difficulty and gothic worlds filled with cryptic storytelling. Elden Ring continued many of the design tenets of the Soulsborne games, albeit in an open world setting. Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin collaborated with FromSoftware to create the newly-crowned Game of the Year’s setting.

Elden Ring won three other awards at the Game Awards 2022, for Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best Role Playing game. Its main competitor, God of War Ragnarok, won six awards across many of the technical categories to be the most-awarded game on the night.
