It’s that time of year when we reflect on the past 12 months and marvel at what transpired. To help remind us of 2022’s biggest events, search engine giant Google published its Year in Search 2022, revealing our top search topics and showing once again how much Australians love sport and playing games.
Wordle, the popular online five-letter word-guessing game bought out by the New York Times, took out Australia’s most searched topic in 2022. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering a Wordle adaptation topped the App Store as well.
Year in Search 2022: Australia’s top 10 Google searches
Sometimes, stereotypes ring true. In this case, the perception that Australia is a sports-loving nation is backed up by Google’s data. Of the top 10 overall Google searches, six related to a sporting event or athlete. Both the Australian Open tennis major and “World Cup” ranked highly, with Shane Warne following close behind.
It’s tricky to determine whether World Cup relates specifically to the 2022 Qatar World Cup currently taking place – of the soccer or football variety, depending on your code allegiance – because both men’s and women’s T20 cricket world cups also took place this year.
Regardless, Australia’s top 10 overall Google searches paint a clear picture of where our major interests lie:
- Wordle
- Australian Open
- World Cup
- Shane Warne
- Ukraine
- Novak Djokovic
- Ashes
- Ash Barty
- Olivia Newton-John
- Betty White
Tennis was a common theme across various search categories in 2022. In addition to the overall representation, retired Tennis pro Ash Barty was our most searched living Australian figure, with fellow tennis players Nick Kyrgios, Thanasi Kokkinakis, Australian of the Year Dylan Alcott, and Alex de Minaur featured in the top 10 Aussies.
- Ash Barty

On the global front, Novak Djokovic was the international person we searched for the most, likely following the controversy regarding his denied entry to play in the 2022 Australian Open. Tennis players once again featured heavily in Australia’s international figure searches:
- Novak Djokovic
- Nadal
- Medvedev
- Amber Heard
- Johnny Depp
- Will Smith
- Andrew Tate
- Anna Delvey
- King Charles
- Danielle Collins
Shane Warne and other 2022 trending Google topics
Of those who passed away in 2022, cricketing legend Shane Warne made us turn to Google more than anyone else – even eclipsing Queen Elizabeth II. Both Olivia Newton-John and Betty White also ranked higher than the former Head of State.
- Shane Warne
- Olivia Newton-John
- Betty White
- Queen Elizabeth
- Anne Heche
- Andrew Symonds
- Taylor Hawkins
- Aaron Carter
- Bob Saget
- Paul Green
Reflective of the extreme weather events across the country, Australia was the top country searching for “floods” and “La Niña” this year. More specifically, search interest in floods increased by over a whopping 200% this year, with La Niña increasing by more than 80%. This led to “when will the rain stop?” being one of the questions we searched the most.
There are plenty more interesting insights from Google’s Year in Search 2022, including our most common COVID questions, and what recipes “dahl” beat out in search rankings. It’s well worth reading the full snapshot to reminisce on another year that was.
