Oppo A80 review: An affordable jack-of-all-trades phone

What separates one phone from another? Usually, there’s a killer app to stand out from the crowd, whether it’s a souped-up camera or a swish-looking display. Instead of flaunting one big feature, the Oppo A80 produces a tidy all-round package, capped off with the brand’s signature sense of style.

Priced at $369 in Australia, the A80 sits in an awkward spot. It’s not quite entry-level nor is it mid-range. As such, it’s clearly better than cheaper handsets but omits a couple of nice-to-haves brandished by slightly more expensive phones.

Oppo’s phones aren’t the most powerful going around, which it makes up for with good-quality cameras and fast charging speeds. That remains consistent with the A80, a handset characterised by an overwhelming sense of familiarity. As much as I’d love a sharper display, there’s not much else to take issue with.

First impressions

I’ve always enjoyed Oppo’s design aesthetic, favouring bright and bold colours instead of dull finishes. Particularly with the Moonlight Purple, the colour of my review device, the eye-catching iridescent sheen looks nice. There is a Starry Black option for those who prefer a more subtle finish, but I think the purple adds a nice level of personality.

On the sides, you notice a classy metallic-esque gloss that adds to the sleek aesthetic. It does catch fingerprints easily though, so prepare to wipe it down frequently.

Even with a 6.67-inch display, the Oppo A80 doesn’t feel too big. I normally prefer smaller phones but this handset sits nicely, giving you a decent-sized screen without being too bulky. Its camera array doesn’t jut out too far either, so the phone sits nearly flush when rested on a table.

As a right-handed person, the A80’s rather iPhone-like design is comfortable to grip. You don’t have to reach far to access the power or volume controls, in addition to the touchscreen. Despite the plastic-feeling and glossy rear material, the Oppo A80 is still satisfyingly grippy.

Like any modern phone, the A80’s setup is a simple process. Oppo uses ColorOS 14, the brand’s version of Android 14, which doesn’t reinvent the wheel. Perhaps more than most brands, there’s a fair bit of bloatware included. Even after declining additional apps when setting up the phone, the A80 still greeted me with loads of extra apps upon bootup, like Temu.

Sure, it’s easy to delete apps you don’t want but I’d prefer not to have them in the first place. Otherwise, it’s a familiar and streamlined phone experience.

Kudos to Oppo for keeping the 3.5mm headphone jack. Even though everything’s going wireless, it’s still nice to have the option of wired audio. Sometimes, the old ways are best. Except when it means no eSIM support. An increasingly ubiquitous feature in mid-range phones, it’s an annoying omission here.

Performance

A trend I’ve observed from recent Oppo phones is that its processing power isn’t quite as strong as similarly priced phones. Instead, the brand focuses on efficiency and cost-effectiveness, evidenced by the A80’s MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset.

Realistically, you don’t notice too much variability between phones costing $300-400. Any slight gains one device might have over another are mainly picked up by benchmarking tools, not real-world use.

The Oppo A80 runs apps, media, and online browsing reasonably well. I noticed some slight lag after bootup or unlocking the phone; nothing that impeded my usage though. At this price point, there’s not too much difference in a handset’s capabilities. Generally, graphically intensive tasks, like gaming, are the main sacrifice.

As the benchmarking tools demonstrate, the Oppo A80 is slightly less powerful than its direct competitors. Will you notice a difference in day-to-day use? Probably not.

As expected, this isn’t a gaming phone. The Oppo A80 can run the Wild Life mobile gaming benchmark from 3D Mark, which is a good start considering some entry-level phones can’t even do that. However, the results indicate the Mediatek chipset isn’t built for graphics. And that’s totally fine because only phones considerably more expensive can reliably play the latest games.

Display

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I always prefer a high-resolution display over a higher refresh rate. Having both a crisp and smooth screen is great, but give me a crystal clear reading experience any day of the week.

Why the preface? Most budget phones favour the opposite. One of these days, I’m keen to ask why that’s the case. Perhaps it’s because screens with higher refresh rates are cheaper to produce, or maybe market research indicates that customers prefer smoother displays.

This is a long-winded way of referencing the Oppo A80’s 720p LCD screen. It actually looks quite nice and produces decent brightness and vibrancy levels, even without OLED technology. I would like it more if it was slightly sharper, which is nicer for reading text.

Its 120Hz refresh rate is nice and smooth, I’ll give it that. Swiping and scrolling feel pleasant and highly responsive, making a satisfyingly tactile user experience. But it’s tough not to glance at other brands that combine sharpness and refresh rate at a similar price.

Battery

Sporting a 5,100mAh battery and wired charging speeds of up to 45W, the Oppo A80 has impressive on-paper specs. However, you need a separate charger to benefit from those speeds.

I’ll admit to being a bit surprised that Oppo didn’t include a wall charger in the box. Some of the brand’s slightly pricier phones, like the Reno 11 F 5G, ship with a charger so you can get fast speeds out of the box.

You do get an included USB-C cable to use with existing chargers, but it means you don’t immediately benefit from Oppo’s speedy charging technology. It’s not a deal-breaker at all; very few phone manufacturers include in-box chargers these days. As a heads-up, the company’s first-party 45W charger costs $45.

As for the battery, the Oppo A80 performed fairly. It’s not the best-performing phone battery I’ve encountered but it does the job.

My easily repeatable method for comparing phones involves an hour of YouTube video playback, setting the phone’s brightness and volume to 50%. From a fully charged battery, the Oppo A80 dropped to 94%.

That’s one percentage point lower than the similarly priced Moto G85 from Motorola. From my testing, the benchmark is the Motorola Edge Fusion 50, which remained at an impressive 99% after an hour of video playback.

Although batteries don’t necessarily deplete at a linear rate, it’s a decent indicator of all-day performance. Between general app use and scrolling, the A80 easily gets through a day without needing a top-up.

The battery test also doubled as a chance to test the A80’s speakers. Although it’s no replacement for a decent set of headphones, the handset can definitely pump the volume. It’s not overly distorted or tinny either, which can plague some entry-level and mid-range phones.

Photography is typically one of Oppo’s strengths, employing decent camera sensors and post-processing to create nicely lit and vibrant images. Based on a handful of photos I took with the A80, this trend looks to continue.

Particularly in good lighting conditions, the phone does take nice photos, capturing a decent level of detail for a handset at this price.

Compared to the Moto G85, the Oppo A80 takes a sharper image. You can see more details on the stitching of the plush from the Oppo, although both photos look nice. I think the Moto’s processing is slightly more aesthetically pleasing, cranking up the colours, but the Oppo looks more true to life.

It does reasonably well in low-light conditions too. Shutting the living room curtains and taking the same photo in near-total darkness revealed predictable results. The lighting is good but you lose a fair chunk of detail, especially in the background.

If there’s one thing the Oppo A80 camera does noticeably better, it’s lighting. This photo of Lego flowers looks more evenly lit, showing the bright whites more prominently.

Its 8MP selfie camera is capable, performing at its best with ample light. There are beautification and smoothing settings that you can enable but I tend to set them to zero. Looking at a selfie I took though, perhaps I should have used some of the post-processing to address the pimple on the end of my nose.

I suppose the upside is that the phone captured that level of detail. So, thanks Oppo, I guess?

Facial blemishes aside, the colours look nice. From the deep blue of my jumper to the objects lining the shelf in the background, it’s a vibrant image.

Who is the Oppo A80 for?

A nicely designed phone, the Oppo A80 battles manfully in the highly competitive sub-$400 market. It’s a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, doing well in several areas without claiming clear ascendancy.

Like many Oppo phones, the A80’s camera and fast-charging technologies are the highlight. Its speed and power might not be world-beating but the difference is minimal when placed alongside its peers.

Google TV Streamer is out now in Australia, replaces Chromecast

The Google Chromecast is dead, long live the Google TV Streamer! After a brief wait, Google has launched its new TV Streamer device in Australia.

Succeeding the Chromecast, the new obviously-named streaming hardware is said to be faster, courtesy of a beefier processor and 4GB of RAM (double the Chromecast). Another difference is 32GB of internal storage, up from the Chromecast’s 8GB.

A 4K streaming device, the Google TV Streamer is compatible with Dolby Vision HDR formats, encompassing most modern streaming services. It’s also Google’s first streaming hardware to support Dolby Atmos audio. In other words, compatible sound systems can pump out up-firing audio to produce the effect of position-based sound.

From a usability standpoint, the Chromecast successor includes an upgraded remote. It carries over previous models’ voice controls while adding a “Find My Remote” feature. So, if you lose it under the couch cushions, you can use your voice or the Google Home app to ping the remote. It also comes with a customisable button you can program to open your favourite app or swap between inputs.

Oddly, the TV Streamer only supports the older Wi-Fi 5 standard. That’s fine for streaming most content but the faster Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E technology supported by the Fire TV Stick 4K range would improve connection quality. Fortunately, you now have wired Ethernet connectivity as an option, providing a better overall connection if it can reach your router.

Launching this week, the timing could not be more perfect from Google’s perspective. Foxtel’s Hubbl recently encountered a widespread outage, leaving users unable to access their streaming services. Those customers might be eyeing off an alternative.

Priced at $159 in Australia, the Google TV Streamer is available now via JB Hi-Fi, and is coming to Harvey Norman, Officeworks, and Google’s online store throughout the week.

20+ games to feature in PlayStation’s September State of Play

PlayStation has confirmed another State of Play presentation, where the company will showcase more than 20 PS5 and PSVR 2 games.

Set to take place on 25 September 2024 in Australian time zones, the latest State of Play is scheduled to last 30 minutes. Based on the proximity to the recent PS5 Pro announcement, it’s likely to feature games enhanced by the more powerful hardware.

Broadcast live on PlayStation’s official YouTube channel and Twitch, few other details exist at this stage. Of particular note is the specific mention of the PSVR 2.

PlayStation’s virtual reality headset impressed at launch in 2023 but hasn’t seen many games since. It recently gained an adapter letting you connect the peripheral to PCs, so perhaps the PSVR 2 is getting a new lease on life.

When to watch the September 2024 State of Play

Fortunately, we Australians won’t have to wake up at a ridiculous time to tune in. Most of the nation can tune in while having breakfast.

Here’s when you can watch, sorted by time zone:

  • Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart (AEST): 25 September at 8:00 AM
  • Adelaide, Darwin (ACST): 25 September at 7:30 AM
  • Perth (AWST): 25 September at 6:00 AM

Whether we’ll see a suite of unrevealed games or a focus on confirmed upcoming titles remains to be seen.

Is it too early to announce a sequel to Astro Bot? I’d certainly like to see that.

Wiz smart lights review: Time to revisit the smart home

Some years ago, lots of people, including myself, went out and bought a smart light globe or two, but since then, many of us have gone back to the old way of doing things. In an effort to try the smart home again, I look at some of the latest smart lights from Wiz (stylised as “WiZ”).

Smart lights might be one of many aspects of the modern smart home, but they provide an understanding of how technology is evolving and how it can improve our lives at home.

Why you should take another look at the smart home

Simply put, a smart home is your home, but smarter. A home that can do things for you automatically or via voice controls, that’s the general idea.

So, how does it work?

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to smart homes. Generally, they use sensors and connected devices to streamline daily tasks. For example, a smart thermostat can learn your schedule and adjust the temperature accordingly. Smart lights can turn on and off based on your movements. And a smart speaker can control your entire home with just your voice.

There are several main benefits to smart home technology:

  • Convenience: Automate everyday tasks.
  • Efficiency: Save energy by controlling appliances and lights.
  • Security: Monitor your home remotely and receive alerts for potential threats.
  • Comfort: Create a personalised living environment that suits your preferences.

You don’t need to replace everything in your home to enjoy the benefits. Start small with a few smart devices, like a smart light bulb or power plug. You can gradually add more devices to your home as you get comfortable.

Most of us live by the mantra, “If it ain’t broken, why fix it?” However, if you can make an improvement that does not cost too much and is easy to install, maybe it’s worth taking another look at how the latest smart home devices may just save you some money and make your life that little bit easier.

To help with this, Wiz sent me some of their latest smart lights and accessories to review, including the following:

Wiz smart plug

The smart plug turns any standard power socket into a smart plug, allowing connected devices to be turned on and off via your smartphone or voice via Google Home, Amazon Alexa or Apple’s Siri smart speakers.

A smart plug, for example, can turn any 240-volt radio on as an alarm clock at a specified time.

A new reason to use a smart plug is within NSW energy providers will start to bill for exported solar power during certain hours rather than providing a credit. To avoid being charged, use the power yourself by programming a smart plug to start a pool pump or charge vacuums, power tools, etc. during this time.

I would have liked the plug to support energy usage monitoring. The box indicated it did but app indicated it was not supported. This may be addressed at a future software update.

Wiz smart bulbs

Available as either a screw or bayonet bulb, these smart bulbs plug into a standard socket and can be controlled by smartphone or voice, as well as the ability (model dependent) to change colours and intensity. 

At my home I use smart bulbs to turn on each evening in common areas automatically. This ensures you never search/scrabble for the light switch and provides security lighting when you are not home. 

A new feature called Spacesense allows these modern bulbs to detect movement. This means that when used as a pair or more, the lights will switch on when movement is detected. This feature can be particularly handy when arriving home at night with your hands full. The lights automatically come on without having to do any fancy wiring or get an electrician in.

These are relatively new offerings on the market, and although they are definitely lights and have the same functionality as smart light bulbs, their function is more one of art.

A recent trend in home decor is to use lighting beyond white light to create a certain vibe in your living spaces.

The light bar is useful for shelves or corners needing accent light.

The flex strip is a bendable neon strip that allows you to make shapes on a wall. For example, you could make the shape of a star or a love heart.

Wiz smart lights features

Although all the Wiz products will work straight out of the box the only way to get the full smart functionality is to download the Wiz Connected app.

All the products allow integration with smart home speakers, so they can be set up to operate via voice. The Wiz app allows smart products to be turned on and off, as well as scheduled. Smart devices can also be grouped together, say, into a room, and controlled as a group.

The App is also where you enable the Spacesense feature, which allows lights to be activated when you enter a room and switched off when you leave.

Some of the lighting products, including all the lights GadgetGuy tested, allow customisation of lighting colours and brightness. Wiz quotes 16 million different colour possibilities. These colours can be changed, strobed, etc. to create different moods and effects. You may change the lighting scheme to match a party or a change of mood or maybe signal someone to identify your house by the purple light.

Accessories such as movement sensors and a manual switch may also be purchased and integrated with the smart devices.

Using the Wiz smart devices 

The Wiz smart devices support the “Matter” standard which is an industry protocol for home smart devices. This means that the products will work with other devices and other non-Wiz apps. This is in theory as this standard is still in flux.

Even before I had the chance to pair each of the devices I was testing, my smartphone recognised a new smart device and tried to add the product to my Google Home. This is great, but I wanted to test the Wiz app, so it’s best to avoid the other option until the Matter standards are fully integrated. I made the mistake of accepting the first Google Home request, which then resulted in me having to add the product manually to the Wiz app.

Assuming you download the Wiz app, turn the product on, add the product, and choose a room, the procedure is pretty straightforward. As you become more comfortable with the app, you can then play around and do more complicated tasks like group scheduling, etc. Additional family members can be added, so the whole household also has control of the smart devices.

I found the products to switch on and off as expected, change colour on demand and the whole light decor trend is growing on me. Best of all I can view if these products are active from anywhere in the world with internet access and turn off lights or devices when they have been left on and save some money.

Who are Wiz smart lights for? 

Anyone confident with a smartphone will find these Wiz smart devices easy to use. Their use can take a standard light or power point socket and breathe a whole new life that that socket was previously capable of. No extra wiring or other special products are required, just a Wi-Fi network, a smartphone and smart devices.

Whether saving money on power, automating a task, or setting a mood with lighting, modern-day smart home products like these Wiz lights are worth another look at how they may enrich your lives.
