CUPERTINO — One person was killed in a fatal traffic collision on Interstate 280 in Cupertino, an incident that caused part of the freeway to be shut down on Saturday, officials reported.
The fatal vehicle crash was reported at 1:19 a.m. on Saturday, according to a CHP incident log.
The victim was a motorcyclist who was reported down on the freeway and then was struck by one or more vehicles that were driving past the scene, according to eyewitness accounts provided to a freelance journalist for this news organization.
The deadly accident occurred on southbound Interstate 280 near the North De Anza Boulevard on-ramp to the freeway.
At 1:28 a.m. Saturday, the CHP began to block lanes on the freeway, the incident log states.
Local fire and County Sheriff’s Office units also were dispatched to the scene to deal with the traffic collision.
“We have not released the identity of the victim,” an official with the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office said Saturday.
The Coroner’s Office said it didn’t expect to release the identity of the deceased victim until at least Monday.
One person was transported to the Coroner’s Office in the wake of the traffic accident, the office said.
The CHP didn’t immediately provide further details about the accident, although a Highway Patrol official confirmed on Saturday the incident and the fatality.
At 1:32 a.m., the CHP issued a Sig Alert in connection with the fatal accident.
A Coroner’s Office unit arrived at the scene at 1:53 a.m., the log stated.
