Combine Matt Gandin’s tacos with Simone Mims’ margaritas, and you have a recipe for success.
Bar Comal, the new Mexican-themed spot in the Adams Point neighborhood of Oakland, is officially open after an 18-month delay due to the pandemic. The full-service restaurant and bar from the team behind Berkeley’s Comal is adjacent to Comal Next Door, which opened in June 2020 for taqueria eats including bowls and burritos.
Located across the street from the northeastern tip of Lake Merritt and down the street from the Grand Lake Theatre, the 50-seat Bar Comal (with another 14 seats outside) has a full dinner menu by executive chef Gandin, including his famous fish tacos, platillos (dinner plates with rice, beans and tortillas), shareable bar snacks like nachos, and signature dishes like wild shrimp ceviche in aguachile verde and grilled elote.
Here’s what you need to know about the bar: It offers seven cocktails, several local beers on tap, a curated wine list and an extended back bar of 17 tequilas and a whopping 33 mezcals. The cocktail menu includes an intriguing sipper called the Succulenta, featuring blanco tequila, prickly pear and Xila, a mezcal liqueur made at the Flor de Luna distillery in Mexico City, the only distillery in Mexico run by women.Bar Comal is open from 5 to 9 p.m. daily at 550 Grand Ave., Oakland.
