Woman fatally shot near downtown Oakland

OAKLAND — A 33-year-old woman was fatally shot near downtown early Friday, authorities said.

Her name has not yet been released but police said she lived in Hayward.

She was found shot about 4:07 a.m. Friday in the 1400 block of Castro  Street, which is just east of Interstate 980.  Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

Police have not yet said why the woman was in Oakland and why she was shot.  No arrests have been made.

The killing is the 129th death investigated as a homicide by Oakland police this year.  The California Highway Patrol has also investigated five other homicides on Oakland freeways.  Last year Oakland police investigated 109 homicides in the city.  There were 131 homicides in Oakland in 2012, the highest total since 148 homicides in 2006.
