When buying a new phone, you might immediately gravitate towards the big brands. But there’s plenty of value to be found from telco-branded handsets, like the Telstra T-Elite 5G, one of the cheapest 5G phones in Australia.
Made by ZTE, the phone costs $179 outright if you’re a Telstra customer. In exchange, you get an Android 14 device with a 6.6-inch 120Hz LCD screen. Like other affordable phones, the smoothness of the display takes priority, with the resolution sitting at 1612 x 720 – referred to as “HD+”.
On the inside, the Telstra T-Elite 5G sports a Unisoc T760 processor, a brand commonly seen in budget handsets. It’s accompanied by 128GB of onboard storage, 4GB of RAM – which can be boosted by an additional 4GB of virtual memory – and a 5,000mAh battery.
Although it doesn’t contain eSIM technology – not that you’d expect it at this price point – the telco-branded phone does include NFC tap-and-pay functionality. It also has the fairly standard Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 wireless protocols.
Turn the phone around and you’ll see what’s described as an “AI Dual Camera” array. In practice, it’s a 50MP main lens supported by a 2MP depth sensor, the latter is designed to capture shallow depth of field photos resulting in the blurry “bokeh” effect. For selfies, the phone wields a 5MP front-facing camera.
Telstra T-Elite 5G release date and price
Out now from Telstra, the ZTE-made phone costs $179 outright if you have an existing plan with the telco. Otherwise, you can bundle it with a plan and pay it off over 12, 24, or 36 months. Until 9 September, you can buy the phone on a discounted monthly plan, saving you roughly $71 in the process.
On paper, it’s a reasonable-looking phone and an affordable 5G entry point. We’re currently testing the phone and will update you with our thoughts soon.
