Finally, Google’s foldable phone is coming to Australia. Keen to dip into the growing appetite for big-screen phones, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold will arrive on local shores in the coming weeks.
Remarkably, it’s almost as thin as the Pixel 9 Pro when folded into its 6.3-inch outer display form. Unfolding the phone reveals a big 8-inch main display, larger than the 7.6 inches sported by Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6.
Like the other Google Pixel 9 phones, the Pro Fold runs on the new Tensor G4 chip, along with 16GB of RAM. On the outside, it uses Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, a stainless steel hinge, and carries an IPX8 water-resistant rating.
Taking advantage of the form factor, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold (quite the mouthful) enables Split Screen. As the name suggests, the feature lets you separate apps on the inner display to help with multitasking. For example, you could use one side of the screen to stream videos while taking notes on the other.
Like the other Pro Pixels, the Fold comes with a three-camera rear array. This includes a 5x optical zoom telephoto lens so you can snap subjects from further away.
Unsurprisingly, Google is pushing its AI credentials hard with its new phones. Included with each Pixel 9 Pro is a year-long free trial of Google One AI Premium, granting access to the company’s most up-to-date AI models.
Not all the AI features rely on a cloud connection, however. Google’s on-device Gemini Nano assistant can help with local queries, sourcing information from your apps without anything leaving the phone. Pixel Screenshots are one of the new features, organising and sorting information based on conversational queries.
Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold release date and price
In Australia, Google’s foldable phone arrives on 2 September 2024, slightly later than the rest of the Pixel 9 range. At a starting price of $2,699, it’s pricey, but still cheaper than Samsung’s $2,749 Galaxy Z Fold 6. That level of investment gets you the 256GB model; the 512GB version costs $2,899.
Your colour options of Obsidian and Porcelain are relatively limited compared to Google’s other phones. More importantly, the seven years of software and security updates encompass the Fold.
If there’s a common thread among Google’s new Pixels, it’s that of broader choice. With more sizes to choose from, and now a foldable, there are more Pixels in Australia this year than you can poke a stick at.
