Polestar 2 – a stellar EV experience (review)

Like it or not, electric vehicles are the future. While petrol cars will long have a place in our hearts, there’s actually quite a lot to look forward to with EVs. We had a chance to live with a Polestar 2’s 300kW range topper for a couple of weeks to see what it was like on a day to day basis, and, if it could get our hearts racing.

For those unfamiliar, Polestar is a Swedish “electric performance” brand, and is a sub-brand of Volvo. Polestar, as well as Volvo, are owned by Chinese automotive giant, Geely.

The second model released, Polestar 2 is the company’s first fully electric vehicle, like a Tesla. As such, it relies solely on electricity to run, and isn’t a hybrid model like the Polestar 1.

There are three variants to choose from, with the top of the range sporting a 300kW (408hp) dual-motor setup and 78 kWh battery pack. Then there are two front-mounted single motor options, both with a 170kW motor and a choice of long range 78 kWH or standard 69 kWH batteries.

We were lucky enough to get our hands on the top of the range model, and it was kitted out with a few different option packs including the Plus Pack, Pilot Pack and driver-focused Performance Pack.

Standout inclusions for the Plus pack are the full-length panoramic glass sunroof and Harman Kardon 13 speaker sound system. The Pilot pack gives you safety and driver assistance features such as Pixel LED headlights, Adaptive Cruise with Pilot Assist, 360 degree surround view camera and a host of auto-braking and proximity alerts.

On the go-fast front, the Performance pack gives you adjustable Öhlins Dual Flow Valve dampers, four-piston Brembo front brake callipers, 20-inch forged aluminium wheels and bespoke Continental SportContact(TM)6 tyres.

How it looks

While looks are subjective, we wouldn’t say that the Polestar 2’s fastback design is overly sporty, despite our model being the performance variant. This is likely because the Polestar 2 is intended to deliver a crossover-like experience but with a sedan shape, so it sits a bit higher than you might expect. Still, the eye-catching gold Brembo callipers belay its performance ambitions, and the 20-inch alloy wheels are eye-catching. Overall, we’d say that the Polestar 2 has an attractive, grown-up shape, and not overly aggressive or menacing looking.

Ours came in Snow (white), and you can choose from 5 other colours including Magnesium, Thunder, Midnight, Space and Jupiter.

Interior

True to its Scandinavian roots, the interior is minimalistic and well-considered. It’s a nice car to spend time in, and there’s just the right combination of technology, texture and style. We quite liked the gold seatbelts that were optioned in our review car, and these matched the 4-piston Brembo brakes. 

Unless you specifically choose leather, the Polestar 2 is entirely vegan. Included in the Plus Pack is the WeaveTech upholstery, which is made from recycled plastics and reminiscent of a neoprene wetsuit. It also weighs quite a bit less than leather and is both pliable and comfortable, albeit a bit of a different sensory experience.

The premium metallic accents on the vents, door handles and steering wheel are nice to touch, as are the attractive geometric textures in the fabric across the dash and etched onto panels. There are also nice little Polestar logos on the sunroof, centre console and steering wheel. Our interior included Black Ash on the dash panels, and this has a lovely grain and lends to the Polestar 2’s environmentally responsible aims. 

Tech and infotainment

Being an EV, we expected to see the latest tech in the Polestar 2 and we weren’t disappointed. The 11.5 inch centre mounted floating touch-screen removes the need for many physical buttons or switches, and is quite responsive and easy to use. There are still a few centre console physical controls, such as a rotating knob, along with play/pause, front and rear window defrost and hazard buttons. While you’ll mainly tap on screen for most things, the control wheel and play/pause buttons were useful for selecting music stations and playing and pausing playback. There’s also a full complement of steering wheel buttons to make selections, play music, answer calls and set the cruise control.

The Polestar 2 is the first car in the world to use the Android Automotive OS, made by Google. This is like Google’s Android smartphone interface that many will already be familiar with, only this version is purpose built for cars and isn’t a ‘mirror’ of your phone. 

The system includes Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play store, and connects to your Google account. Don’t like Google? Thankfully there’s Apple CarPlay too, which takes over the main screen with the tap of a button, however, you’ll need to connect your iPhone via a USB-C cable as Wireless CarPlay isn’t supported. As a quick aside, you can wirelessly charge your phone from shelf just under the floating display.

We really loved using Google Maps, which filled up the screen and even shows your expected charge rate at your designation. Another advantage is that the Google Assistant is one of the best ‘natural language’ interfaces around, so using voice commands to request navigation to destinations, looking up a restaurant or asking for general information is actually helpful.

With Google’s Play Store you can also download other apps and add them to the system, and while limited right now, we expect more apps to be added over time. The car we reviewed had Google Maps, Spotify, Pocket Casts (Podcasts) installed, along with a few different 3rd party charge station planners including PlugShare, APRB (A Better Route Planner) and Range Assistant.

You can customise the home screen too, which is divided into 4 panels where you can place app collections for quick access. Also, around the main screen are icons for accessing the 360 degree parking view, car settings, climate controls, seat and steering wheel heating.

Tapping on the car icon, for example, takes you to a new set of menus where you can adjust driving settings, such as regenerative braking levels, driver assist functions, charge settings, and more.

All up, the system is quite intuitive and you don’t have to navigate through many sub-menus to find what you want.

As part of the Plus pack, our car came with a Harman Kardon premium audio system. This is engineered to produce “…audiophile-quality tone and clarity” with a 600 watt output and 13 speakers, including an air-powered subwoofer. The audio quality was impressive, with great isolation from road and ambient noise, a wide and dynamic range from higher frequencies down to a deep and rumbling bass response. You can use the equaliser to tailor the the audio experience to suit your tastes, tune it for the number of people in the car and their positions.

Second Screen

A second display is included behind the driver’s steering wheel, which can mirror the map overlay from the main screen during navigation. It uses clear and easy to read indicators for your speed, power and range, driver assist mode, warnings and more. You can customise this slightly with two modes – one that’s minimalist and the other for navigation, however, it would be nice to see a few other dash configurations like Mercedes, BMW and Audi’s systems.

Over the air updates

As with other electric cars, the Polestar 2 features ‘OTA’ or Over the Air updates. This means that software updates are downloaded to the car wirelessly whenever they become available, so you don’t need to wait for a service to get the latest software. OTA updates can potentially add new features, improve performance and fix issues, and are included in Polestar’s data plan for the first 3 years of ownership.

Charging

As a first time EV driver, I wasn’t all that clear about how to manage the battery during day to day use. Fortunately, it really wasn’t that hard at all. First, the Polestar 2’s charge level is easy to see via the dash mounted display. This both shows your expected range as well as a battery charge percentage. You can also adjust the total limit that the battery can be recharged to – we set ours to 90% as advised by Polestar to keep the battery healthy. You can top it up to 100% if you plan on going on a long trip to maximise your range, however, this should be done sparingly.

Otherwise, if you set a destination with Google Maps, it will let you know what your expected charge level will be when you get there. You can also find other charging stations in your vicinity or along the route. A quick option is to just say: “OK Google, show me charging stations nearby”. The map then displays the location of a number of charging points, including what type of connections they include, available payment options and in some cases whether they are free or not. For even more detailed charge planning, jump on to the PlugShare or ‘A Better Route Planner’ apps, where you can see the number and type of chargers at a location (fast, very fast, etc), drive time to them, and real-time reports if any are in use or out of service. We stuck with the charging details in Google Maps, which was enough for city driving as well as a 3 hour trip from Sydney to Currarong and back.

The Polestar 2 comes with two charging cables suitable for use with home and 3-phase Type 2 charging infrastructure. As our apartment complex doesn’t have any specialised 3-phase charging stations, we simply plugged the Polestar 2 into a standard 1-phase wall socket with the included cable, and charged it overnight. A full charge will take about a night and half the following day, however, plugging it in each night was enough to provide about 300Km of range per day.

When we drove down the coast to Currarong, we were left with 36% charge after a 192Km trip. We simply plugged it in overnight and had plenty of charge to take us back to Sydney the next day. The only tricky bit was making sure there was an outlet near where the Polestar 2 was parked. While it has a 480Km rating on the WLTP scale, the Polestar 2’s real-world max range looked to be about 370Km at a 90% battery, however, this will vary based on a number of factors including how you drive, temperature, terrain, number of passengers and more.

Driving experience

We drove the Polestar 2 for about two weeks. Overall, our experience with an EV was eye-opening, in a very positive way. Driving it was certainly a plus, especially with our performance-focused dual-motor 300kW config. Right from the start, putting the pedal down resulted in near-instant acceleration that pushed my head back into the seat rest. My daily driver is no slouch either – a Porsche Macan Turbo with 324kW and about 150kg less weight – however, the Polestar 2 just felt quicker. Perhaps it’s how the power is delivered given it has 660Nm of torque vs my Macan’s 550Nm. (The dual motor Polestar 2 accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 4.7 seconds with a maximum speed of 205km/h.) Power is on tap any time, including at speeds over 100km/hr, with the same instant response. I never felt like the Polestar 2 was running out of puff, either in the city or on the motorway. The Brembo brakes also did an admirable job of putting down the anchors, washing off speed very rapidly.


I was expecting to feel the Polestar’s 2,113kg curb weight, however, I can’t really say that I did. The car felt nimble in corners, without any noticeable understeer, however, I didn’t push the limits by any means. A quick slalom test felt tight as well, with the car remaining quite flat during weight transfers from left to right.

Without a petrol engine singing at high revs, I half expected the driving to be boring but I didn’t really miss the drama. Inside the cabin is quiet, save for some tyre noise on the motorway, but otherwise, the Polestar’s dynamics and in-car tech kept me engaged.

There are some driving adjustments available too. You can disable the ESP, although I wasn’t on a track and game to try it, and the steering feel can be light, standard or firm. It would be nice to have a bit more adjustability with the chassis settings, such as a sport mode or suspension firmness, however the car is well tuned as is.

It should be said that with the optional performance pack, the Polestar 2’s chassis engineers, in true Scandinavian minimalist fashion, intentionally chose mechanical Öhlins DFV dampers. While optimally set up by the engineers, these can be adjusted, through “…22 different combinations of compression and rebound damping”, so you can tune them if you prefer.

Other Polestar 2 EV features

We really liked the ‘one pedal driving’ feature, which is found on most electric vehicles, where braking is automatically applied when you take your foot off the accelerator. By ‘braking’ we really mean regenerative braking, so the car is converting kinetic energy back to battery charge while slowing down the car. I could drive around the city most of the time without touching the brake but when I did, braking felt seamless and natural. It doesn’t take long to get used to one-pedal braking, and it’s quite a nice way to drive. You can also adjust the car to creep forward like a petrol car when you take your foot off the brake, or just stand still. We kept the creep switched off so the car moves forward only when you press the pedal.

Another thing that you get used to with an EV is the lack of fuss to get moving. Just approach the car, it unlocks automatically, put it in drive and off you go. No start button, no engine vibrations or warming up. And the same goes for parking. Just press the Park button, step out of the car and you’re done. No switching off required.

On our drive down the coast we tried out the Adaptive Cruise and Lane Keeping Assist systems. Using both together feels a bit like autonomous driving, but in reality, it’s no where near something like Tesla’s Self Driving Beta software. While the Polestar 2 will maintain speed based on the car in front, and follow the curves of the roads, there are plenty of bends that are too sharp or not well-defined meaning you’ll need to intervene. Still, using both help reduce the strain of a long drive and are good to have.

Practicality

The crossover-like design made for a useful vehicle too. The lift-back is better than a conventional trunk, with a larger opening for storing objects and a total of 1,095 litres of capacity with the seats down or 405 with them up. There’s a fold up brace that separates the luggage space so you don’t have items rolling around, and a smaller 41 litre shelf beneath the main storage area for placing charging cables. Since there’s no petrol engine, the front trunk or ‘frunk’ has an additional 41 litre storage space for your cables, a few grocery bags or even a few pairs of muddy boots.

The split fold down seats have a pass through for longer objects, such as skis, and the rear passenger compartment is comfortable and there’s enough room for two 6 foot occupants and even a third for shorter distances.

Pricing and warranty

EVs are a new technology and so they don’t come cheap, however, the Polestar 2 is priced in line with many premium European cars. The Long Range model we tested starts at $69,900, and you can pick up a standard range entry model from $59,900, which is also eligible for a $3,000 EV rebate in NSW and Victoria. With added options, including the Plus, Pilot and Performance Packs, ours was $90,800 before on-road costs.

For your peace of mind, it’s good to see that the Polestar 2 has a 5-year manufacturer-backed Australian warranty with 5 years of complimentary roadside assistance and a 5-year/ 100,000 Km complimentary service plan. For the battery, there’s an 8 years/160,000 Km, or 70% state of health (SOH) warranty. Polestar says it expects the useful life of the battery to be the lifetime of the vehicle, depending on how the vehicle is used.

GadgetGuy’s take

Driving the Polestar 2 was enough to convince me that my next car should be an EV. It shows that EVs can be fun to dive, look and feel great and be easy to live with. Polestar is an exciting brand that’s full of innovation, conservation, and Scandinavian simplicity. For those that tend to spend most of their time in cities, with the occasional country trip, there’s really nothing to fear in terms of running out of battery charge, provided that you plug it in most nights. And with the high cost of petrol these days, it’s even more satisfying known that you’ll be saving money each time you recharge and helping pave the way to a cleaner world.

‘The Closer’, a high-tech bottle opener from Heineken makes sure you knock off on time

Heineken has proven itself to be an ally of the working class, thanks to its novel Bluetooth-enabled bottle opener that helps you switch off from work.

Labelled “The Closer”, the bottle opener connects with your computer or laptop via Bluetooth. When it’s beer o’clock at the end of the day and you use The Closer to open a bottle, it sends a signal to put your device in sleep mode, signalling the end of the working day. If you work a job where a midday frothy is permitted, it could also serve as a lunch break reminder, too.

Activated by motion, The Closer’s signal is set off whenever it moves upwards with enough force to open a bottle. In the device details, Heineken recommends you only pair the opener with a single device, as its effectiveness reduces when connected to multiple devices at once.

While it’s often something we take on the chin, overwork is an Australian affliction

More than just a fun gimmick, The Closer represents a movement to “Work Responsibly” and restore work-life balance to overworked employees. According to research from the Australia Institute’s Centre for Future Work, the average worker puts in 1.5 hours of unpaid overtime every week, which adds up to eight 38-hour weeks a year. Additionally, Australian employers receive free labour to the tune of $125 billion every year, something Willemijn Sneep, Heineken Country Manager for Australia, wants to address.

“We want to spark a much-needed conversation about the importance of work-life boundaries and the reprioritisation of our social and leisure time, so everyone can feel empowered to log off and enjoy their personal time,” Sneep said.

“We know the issue is a complicated one and of course won’t solely be solved by The Closer. The Closer isn’t just about the technology, it’s a social provocation to help people see that the pressure to work all the time is evident and more needs to be done.”

The Closer is in limited supply, with Heineken offering the chance for Aussies to win one of the novelty devices via the company’s Facebook page. More information about the bottle opener and links to Heineken’s social media pages can be found on the official website.

EU forces Apple iPhone to adopt USB-C by 2024

The European Parliament has officially voted to force gadgets including the Apple iPhone to adopt USB-C by 2024, in a move that will kill off Apple’s Lightning connector and likely lead to standardised power and data connectors across the globe.

The new rules are part of an EU push to reduce e-waste and consumer hassles. It estimates the change will save European consumers €250 million ($384 million) per year. Discarded and unused chargers represent around 11,000 tonnes of electronic waste per year in the EU.

Coming into force in 2024, the new rules not only apply to smartphones, but also to “all small and medium-sized portable electronic devices”.

This includes tablets, cameras, e-readers, handheld video game consoles and a wide range of other devices. Hardware makers then have another 40 months before the rules also apply to laptops.

The European Parliament voted on Tuesday to adopt USB-C by a vote of 602 votes to 13, with eight abstentions. The use of old chargers will not be outlawed, allowing consumers to continue using existing older devices.

While most gadget makers have already embraced USB-C, Apple has been the main holdout. The 2015-model 12-inch MacBook was the first Apple device to include USB-C and the connector has since come to several iPad models. Now the stage is set for the Apple iPhone to adopt USB-C.

USB-C is an open standard, designed to carry more data and power than Apple’s proprietary Lightning standard, from which Apple derives licensing fees from accessory makers. USB-C’s advantages allow for faster charging and data transfers, along with high-resolution video for connecting to monitors.

Apple introduced the Lightning connector in 2012, when it ditched the 30-pin dock connector which was introduced with the 3rd generation iPod classic in 2003 and also used by the early iPhone models.

Rather than adopt USB-C in the iPhone going forward, Apple may side-step the EU ruling by removing the charge/data port entirely. iPhones already support wireless charging, using Apple’s MagSafe and the Qi open standard, along with wireless data transfers.

The European Parliament statement added: “As wireless charging becomes more prevalent, the European Commission will have to harmonise interoperability requirements by the end of 2024, to avoid having a negative impact on consumers and the environment.”

Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) earbuds: loud and clear (review)

Doubling-down on noise cancellation, yet smart enough to let you hear what’s important, the Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) earbuds change your relationship with the world around you.  

Active noise cancellation was once reserved for bulky over-ear headphones, designed to protect your sanity on long-haul flights, but it has gained mainstream appeal over the last few years. At first its appearance in tiny earbuds seemed a gimmick, but they’ve improved in quality and proven their worth in everyday noisy environments – especially over the last few years as we’ve moved between working at home, in the office and on the road.

One benefit of active noise cancellation in earbuds is that you don’t need to crank up your music as loud to block out the distractions of the world around you. This is certainly better for your hearing and means you’re more likely to hear those important sounds.

The Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) earbuds offer a dramatic improvement on both fronts, in part thanks to Apple’s new H2 chip. While outclassing the original Apple AirPods Pro when it comes to active noise cancellation, they also overhaul Transparency mode for those times when you need to hear what’s going on around you.

First impressions

Before you even take the Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) out of their charge case, you’ll see a few subtle improvements on their design of their predecessors.

The charge case is a fraction thicker, wider and heavier, but not enough that you’d notice. What you will notice is a tiny lanyard loop, so you’re less likely to lose the case.

Should you still manage to misplace it, the case now features several tiny speaker holes, so it can emit a handy beep when you search for it using Apple’s Find My app. Plus, each earbud can individually play a sound when lost. The U1 chip used in AirTags is now built into the case, although it’s a shame Apple can’t build that handy lanyard loop into its AirTags.

Apple has stuck with the Lightning charge port on the charge case, even as the pressure builds to fully embrace USB-C. The case also works with MagSafe and Apple Watch chargers, as well as Qi wireless charging. The speaker emits a reassuring chime when the case begins charging.

As for the earbuds themselves, the stems are a fraction longer, but again not so much that you’d notice. What is noticeable is the extra black sensor strip on the side of each earbud, which improves its ability to detect when they’re in your ears.

Active noise cancellation isn’t just about software, it still relies on a good fit in your ear. With this in mind, Apple now includes an extra small set of eartips alongside the small, medium (pre-installed) and large eartips. During the set-up you can also test to ensure you’ve got a nice tight seal when they’re in your ears.

Set-up supposedly only requires you to flip open the case alongside your iGadget, with the AirPods inside, at which point your iGadget will automatically recognise them and begin the set-up routine. As with previous AirPods, I’ve found this is still temperamental and it can take a few tries before your Apple device acknowledges the presence of the AirPods. Once it does, you’re good to go.

Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) features

While the original AirPods Pro were already pretty slick, Apple has made quite a few improvements which make the Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) a worthy successor.

Firstly, the onboard processing from the new H2 chip improves active noise cancellation – Apple claims it’s doubled the effectiveness. The H2 chips also introduces Adaptive Transparency mode which can intelligently adjust the volume of different noises. Apple says it samples audio 48,000 times per second, reducing the volume of harsh noise like siren down to around 85 dB.

The new AirPods Pro also allow you to personalise spatial audio, using your device’s camera to scan your ears. Spatial audio allows artists to mix their music so the sound appears to come from all around, including from above.

As with previous Apple audio gear, spatial audio also supports dynamic head tracking, so the sound shifts as you turn your head to make it appear if it is always coming from the same direction.

This sounds like a gimmick but it’s actually quite effective at creating more immersive audio and a wider soundstage. Apple throws in an Apple Music trial, hoping that you’ll consider spatial audio one reason to stick with it over a rival streaming music service. Apple Music also supports lossless audio, but these Apple earbuds don’t.

When it comes to controlling the Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you’ll find a new dedicated menu which appears at the top of the Settings menu when they’re connected to your device. Unfortunately this isn’t extended to the previous generation.

Apple has also enhanced the earbuds’ built-in touch-sensitive controls. Now you can stroke your finger up and down the front of either stem to adjust the volume. If this doesn’t suit you, thankfully there’s the option to disable it in the Accessibility menus.

Accessibility features

Speaking of accessibility, the new Apple AirPods Pro inherit enhanced audio features available for people with less than perfect hearing. You need to dip into the menus to enable and adjust them.

Unfortunately, jumping between the various AirPod Pro 2 and Accessibility menus quickly becomes confusing and frustrating – with some options only appearing once you enable options in other menus. Apple really needs to make it all a lot more straightforward for people looking to make the most of the AirPod accessibility features.

Conversation Boost makes it easier to hear voices directly in front of you in a loud environment, while Headphone Accommodations can amplify the frequencies that you struggle with. Live Listen works with an iPhone to pick up sound at a distance, which is handy when listening to a lecturer in a packed auditorium.

From a health and fitness perspective, Apple didn’t deliver on rumours that it would add heart rate and body temperature sensors. This is perhaps to ensure that the Apple faithful still strap an Apple Watch to their wrist.

Quality – Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode

Apple isn’t exaggerating, the active noise cancellation improvement over the 1st gen AirPods Pro is striking. Standing next to a loud exhaust fan on high, the originals significantly reduce the sound of the motor, while the 2nd gen eliminate the sound completely – all you can hear is the sound of rushing air.

It’s a similar improvement when it comes to less predictable background sounds. The originals do a good job of muffling music playing in the room, but the 2nd gen strips out a lot more of the low end so that ambient music also sounds a lot thinner and softer.

The effect on voices is interesting. Even as you crank up the exhaust fan and the active noise cancellation is forced to work harder, the volume of someone talking to you barely changes as the AirPods Pro adjust to the environment.

This isn’t Adaptive Transparency at play, although you can dip into Headphone Accommodations in the Accessibility settings to adjust how much of the background noise gets through and the quality of voices in Transparency mode. This is handy if you want to use the earbuds to combat “pub deafness” so you can hear conversations more clearly in a noisy room. 

Of course, if you want to hear someone clearly, you can also squeeze the tip of an earbud to pause your music. Or squeeze and hold to switch from active noise cancellation to  Transparency mode, which takes advantage of the earbuds’ external microphones to let in the sounds from around you.

Apple has enhanced Transparency mode, so it’s now far less obvious that what you’re hearing has been amplified through the earbuds. What you hear is barely distinguishable from real-world sound, especially if you’re still listening to music. If it’s spatial audio, in Transparency mode you’d swear the music was playing in the room and everyone can hear it.

Adaptive Transparency’s main job is to curb noises which are so loud they could damage your ears. I couldn’t get it to kick in using a hairdryer or a car horn, but standing too close to a Sonos speaker blasting out Nirvana’s Breed at full volume did the trick.

With Kurt Cobain screaming in my face, Adaptive Transparency was enough to take the edge off the volume of the music so it was more comfortable, without impacting too much on sound quality. This could be great if you struggle with the volume at concerts and movies but don’t want to use basic earplugs which ruin the sound. If this sounds like you, another alternative is the impressive passive noise cancellation capability of $50 Loop Earbuds, which also tone down loud noises without muffling the sound quality.

Quality – Audio

When it comes to music quality, the Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) follow in the footsteps of the AirPods 3 in significantly beefing up the low end while still delivering crisp, clean sound. It’s a striking improvement, you don’t need to be a music snob to hear the difference.  

For some listeners, the more full-bodied sound will come as a much-welcome improvement over Apple’s traditional balanced yet flat sound. You’ll really appreciate the improvement if your taste in music leans towards tracks with crashy drums and a a fat bass line, but even more nuanced music like jazz gains more depth.

It’s worth mentioning that the new AirPods Pro (2nd generation) use an always-enabled Adaptive EQ feature to constantly optimise the sound based on your ears and what’s happening in the world around you. You can choose from a range of EQ presets in the iOS menus, but you can’t manually tweak the EQ unless it’s in a third-party audio app like Spotify.

When it comes to voice calls, it seems the new AirPods Pro feature the same Full-HD AAC-ELD speech codec introduced with the AirPods 3, delivering a subtle improvement. This was reportedly also to the original AirPods Pros in a software update.

GadgetGuy’s take

With the Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation), Apple has taken what was already a slick product and improved it in almost every way.

If you just care about music quality then you’ll appreciate the improved low-end, but much of the new earbuds’ strengths are thanks to the improved processing which goes into features like Transparency mode and the Accessibility options. If you want immersive music wherever you go, but need a little help when it comes to hearing everything else, you’ll love the sound of Apple’s latest AirPods Pro.

Would I buy it?

Yes, if I was sure I would benefit from the active noise cancellation.

Google Maps can now give you air quality updates directly in the app

It’s now even easier to plan for a safe trip outdoors, thanks to a recent update to Google Maps that lets you check air quality.

Now available in Australia via the Google Maps app on iOS and Android devices, you can add an air quality layer to view the conditions outside. Additionally, you can use Google Search to quickly check a specific location’s air quality. Sourced from state and territory government agencies, this data includes Air Quality Index (AQI) and Air Quality Categories (AQC). This information provides an indication of how healthy the air is at any given location, how recent the information is, and links to further resources.

It’s a timely feature, too, considering we’re approaching the Australian summer and the risk of bushfires increases. Beyond that, it’s likely to help people with medical conditions affecting the respiratory system avoid risky outdoor situations. Alongside weather forecasts and UV ratings, air quality readings in Google Maps should make it easier to plan outings through a single app.

On the convenience of including air quality updates through Google, Mark Taylor, EPA Victoria’s Chief Environmental Scientist Professor, believes it will benefit people alongside the agency’s services.

“EPA Victoria’s air monitoring provides important data and health information to the community through our AirWatch website,” Taylor said. “We welcome the opportunity provided by Google to have our information shared with even more people across the state.”

“The real-time data can help people with respiratory difficulties or illnesses to avoid areas impacted by poor air quality in times of emergency like a bushfire or severe pollen event. AirWatch shows the level of pollutants in the air at monitoring sites across Victoria. With this information on hand, people can make decisions about how they will enjoy the great outdoors.”

How to enable the air quality layer on Google Maps

Although you can find air quality by location using Google’s native search function, there’s a simple way to add the feature to Google Maps. Simply tap on the layers icon (it looks like squares tiled on one another) below the search bar on the right, and then select Air Quality. Now, when you browse Google Maps, you’ll see visualised air quality ratings as provided by government agencies.


It’s a nifty addition to Google Maps and one that further reduces the need for a separate weather app. Plus, it also saves time for those who need to check government websites each time before leaving the house.
