1,000-pound horse hoisted to safety by helicopter

A 1,000-pound horse named Sunny was rescued from a ravine by helicopter near Lake Skinner on Friday, Nov. 26.

Sunny’s flight took about 10 minutes, courtesy of Riverside County Animal Services and other public safety responders who teamed up for the hoist rescue.

The 4-year-old gelding wound up in a ravine between two boulders after his rider fell off the horse on Wednesday. The ravine was just off of Indian Oak Drive, west of De Portola Road, in unincorporated Temecula.

The horse could not be airlifted out until Friday because of high winds, said Lt. Lesley Huennekens, with Animal Services.

So Sunny’s owner camped with him overnight, offering company and comfort, authorities said.

Before his airlift out of the ravine, Sunny was sedated to allow rescuers to safely strap on the specialized harness – called an Anderson Sling. A resident in the area let the sheriff’s helicopter pilot land Sunny in their field..

“These airlift rescues require optimum conditions,” Huennekens said in a release. “We’re so thankful to the HART crew from the Riverside city fire department, and our county partners in the fire and sheriff’s departments to make this operation a major success.

“Saving Sunny from this predicament will be a highlight of the year for all of us,” she added.
