49ers pregame: How much Mitchell in running back rotation?

SANTA CLARA — Elijah Mitchell will suit up after missing the 49ers’ last game, but how much work will the rookie running back get today against the Minnesota Vikings?

Well, it would seem odd for them to lean heavily on Mitchell less than two weeks since a stabilizing pin was inserted into his right hand’s fractured middle finger.

Without him last Sunday, the 49ers pounded the ball well to win at Jacksonville, and they used a combination of Jeff Wilson Jr. (19 carries, 50 yards), Trey Sermon (10 carries, 32 yards) and Deebo Samuel (eight carries, 79 yards).

But with Mitchell cleared, and with fresh legs, he could see ample time if he gets hot.

Mitchell, despite missing three games this rookie year, leads the 49ers with 560 rushing yards (4.8 yards per carry). The Vikings are allowing 4.76 yards per carry, and no team is yielding more.

Running back JaMycal Hasty is out his sixth game this season with an ankle injury.

Also out: defensive linemen Mo Hurst and Jordan Willis, and offensive lineman Colton McKivitz.

GREENLAW’S RETURN

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw is playing after he got activated Saturday off injured reserve, where he’s toiled since undergoing adductor surgery to repair an injury he aggravated in an interception return for a touchdown just before halftime of the season opener.

Defensive end Dee Ford remains on IR. His three-week, practice-evaluation window opened Thursday. He’s missed the past four games.

VIKINGS INACTIVES

Their defensive line this week lost Everson Griffen (reserve/non-football illness) and Dalvin Tomlson (COVID reserve), so they signed Tashawn Bower (No. 73) off the Patriots practice squad and activated T.J. Smith from the practice squad.

Safety Myles Dorn also was activated from the practice squad.

Inactive for the Vikings are  quarterback Kellen Mond, wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette, cornerback Harrison Hand, linebacker Chazz Surratt, safety Camryn Bynumj and guard Wyatt Davis.
