How deadly is coronavirus? See where COVID-19 ranks among other causes of death

Coronavirus was the third leading cause of death in the United States in 2020 behind heart disease and cancer, according to figures from the National Center for Health Statistics and the National Vital Statistics System. There were 3.3 million deaths in the U.S. in 2020.

See below top ten causes of death in 2020 in order and how they stack up against the deadliness of coronavirus:

Heart disease: 1 in 476

Cancer: 1 in 549

COVID: 1 in 952

*Unintentional injury: 1 in 1,711

Stroke: 1 in 2,068

Chronic respiratory disease: 1 in 2,169

Alzheimer’s disease:  1 in 2,466

Diabetes: 1 in 3,254

Flu and pneumonia: 1 in 6,150

Kidney disease: 1 in 6,295

*Unintentional injuries were largely driven by drug overdoses
