If you woke up to see the news of something called a Nintendo Alarmo, I promise you didn’t sleep in until April 1. Yes, Nintendo has announced an interactive alarm clock.
Officially called the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo (which rolls right off the tongue), the quirky device does pretty much what it says on the tin. It plays various sounds and animations from Nintendo’s vast history of gaming to try and get you out of bed in the morning.
When your alarm goes off, the Nintendo Alarmo plays a scene from your chosen game. Once it detects movement, like a person getting out of bed, it’ll play a celebratory chime. In essence, it’s turning us all into Pavlov’s dogs, conditioned to respond to fun sounds.
If, however, you don’t get out of bed, the alarm repeats. The longer you take to get up, the more intense the alarm becomes. Instead of Princess Peach appearing on-screen, you might see the less gentle Bowser pay a visit.
Depending on your preferences, you can designate scenes from games like Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 3, or Pikmin 4. There’s even Ring Fit Adventure representation for those who jumped on the fitness train a few years ago.
Designed to sit on a bedside table, the Nintendo Alarmo also tracks your sleep and plays chimes throughout the day. According to the FAQs, it’s mainly suited to people who sleep by themselves, as it doesn’t appear to properly track two people in the same bed.
As covered by Vooks, Nintendo’s surprise device costs $159.95 in Australia with a strange lottery system in place. Nintendo Switch Online members can register for the first wave of Alarmos (Alarmoes?) that launch on 13 November 2024. For everyone else, the clock will be available via the online My Nintendo Store next year.
