Expanding its range of smart home devices, Amazon has launched its Blink brand of home security cameras in Australia.
We’re getting two devices to start with: the Blink Outdoor 4 and Blink Mini 2 cameras. Amazon acquired Blink in 2017, with the sub-brand co-existing alongside the Ring video doorbells and security cameras. At a quick look, Blink appears to target more of an affordable market, while Ring caters to a premium audience.
Starting with the cheapest of the two, the Blink Mini 2 is a plug-in camera for indoor and outdoor use that starts at $69. It comes with many of today’s standard smart tech features at an affordable price point; 1080p footage, an LED spotlight, and two-way audio communication.
At the slightly pricier end of the scale, the Blink Outdoor 4 starts at $149, offering battery-powered wireless connectivity. It also records in 1080p, with faster motion detection technology the main feature difference.
Amazon claims that the Blink Outdoor 4 lasts up to two years running on a couple of AA batteries. Paired with rechargeable batteries, like these from Paleblue, you could get decent usage without being wasteful.
To use the outdoor Blink camera, you need a receiver called the Blink Sync Module 2. It comes with the Outdoor 4, supporting remote control of up to 10 cameras from your phone.
Like most home security companies, cloud storage for your footage requires a paid subscription. This starts from $5 per month, enabling cloud storage for up to 60 days and person detection. It also unlocks a feature called “Blink Moments” that stitches recorded clips together into one video, which you can then share quickly.
Out now, the new Blink security cameras are available in Australia from Amazon and Bunnings Warehouse.
