In a world where phone brands are competing to create the most human-like interactions, the HMD Fusion adopts a different tactic. Just like we change clothes to adapt to different conditions, the Fusion can wear different “outfits” to customise its functionality.
Originally revealed at IFA 2024, HMD’s mid-range phone comes looking like it’s arrived directly from the factory floor, with visible connector pins and all. That’s because you can attach various cases referred to as “outfits”, each providing a different feature. One case adds wireless charging support, another boosts the phone’s ruggedness, and there’s also a case equipped with a built-in ring light.
Out of the box, the HMD Fusion has a 6.56-inch 720p display with a 90Hz refresh rate. Running a Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chip, the phone includes 8GB of RAM with 256GB of onboard storage. Two years of OS upgrades and three years of security updates is fairly reasonable given the mid-range pricing.
Available now in Australia, the HMD Fusion costs $499 from major retailers, including HMD’s online store. Shipping with a transparent case to start with, additional Outfits are set to launch in December.
Like the brand’s other phones, like the HMD Skyline and HMD Pulse range, the Fusion supports DIY repairs. Through a partnership with iFixit, you can replace the screen, battery or charging ports using repair kits that start at $39.99. It’s a decent way to prolong the life of your phone without paying someone else to do it.
