New Arlo Essential camera wants you to forget about charging

Smart home tech can be great for keeping an eye on your abode, except when it comes to recharging or replacing batteries. Instead of charging your security cameras every few months, the new Arlo Essential 2K XL boasts a much larger battery than its predecessor.

Starting at $199 for a single camera, Arlo’s beefed-up security camera follows on from last year’s affordable Essential range. Arlo claims the XL model has four times the battery life of the previous Essential 2K camera, for $40 more.

In terms of how long that works out to be, the 2023 Essential 2K advertises up to four months of use between charges. Some back-of-the-napkin maths sees the Essential 2K XL lasting upwards of a year, which should equate to more of a set-and-forget situation uninterrupted by battery depletion.

Other than the bigger battery, the Arlo Essential 2K XL functions similarly to last year’s model. That means 2K resolution video, night vision, and two-way audio communication via the Arlo app and the camera.

Like most of Arlo’s smart home security gear, you can customise smart alerts, pinging your phone when the camera detects motion or nearby sound. Arlo also recently upgraded its subscription service adding person and vehicle recognition features for paid users.

Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, the Arlo Essential 2K XL is weather-resistant. So, if you live in a particularly rainy area, you shouldn’t need to worry about water ruining the camera.

Available directly through Arlo’s online store and various retailers, the longer-lasting camera comes individually and in a three-pack.

  • Arlo Essential 2K XL: $199
  • Arlo Essential 2K XL three-pack: $569

At $40 more than the non-XL version, it’s a reasonable option if you don’t want to recharge your camera every few months. Alternatively, if you want a budget-conscious solution, there’s also a sub-$100 1080p model available through Officeworks. It may not have the bigger battery but it’s one of the more affordable home security cameras on the market.
