Honda sideswipes big rig, leading to fatal crash on I-680

A Honda Civic driver on a freeway died Friday after sideswiping a big rig, setting off a chain reaction that ended with a pickup truck crashing into the Honda, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened on southbound Interstate 680 around 5:50 a.m., near the Interstate 580 interchange, according to the CHP. It also caused three freeway lanes to be blocked and led to a Sig Alert for severe traffic that still was in effect at 9 a.m.

CHP spokesman Officer Tyler Hahn said the crash happened when the Honda sideswiped the big rig that was traveling in the fourth lane from the far left. That collision caused the Honda to lose control and cross all lanes of traffic.

The Honda hit the center divider wall and came to a rest sideways in the far left lane, Hahn said. A Ford pickup truck then slammed into the Honda.

The driver died at the scene. Authorities did not immediately identify the driver, pending notification of relatives.

The CHP issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic at 6:12 a.m. on southbound I-680 just north of the interchange, because the two far left lanes were blocked. At 6:30 a.m., the aftermath and investigation caused the third lane to be blocked.
