A middle school student in Pinole emailed a shooting threat to school staff earlier this week, police said Friday.
In a statement, Pinole police said the email came into Pinole Middle School, 1575 Mann Dr., around 8:20 p.m. on Monday night, hours after another student had been found with a BB gun in his backpack on campus.
Pinole Police Lt. Jeremy Crone said via email Friday that police investigated to see if the two incidents were tied together and determined they were not.
Police said the 12-year-old student was cited for threatening violence to another person that will result in death or great bodily injury to occur upon a school ground. He then was released into the custody of a parent.
The email threatened a shooting on campus on Tuesday, police said. Pinole police added additional patrols to patrol the campus and the area surrounding it Tuesday morning.
Detectives with the assistance of school officials identified the student who wrote the email, police said. The student eventually confessed, police said.
West Contra Costa Unified School District spokesman Ryan Phillips said the school also will enforce discipline upon the student. Privacy laws prevent the district from revealing the discipline, he said.
The district also is working with Pinole Middle School to determine how best to prevent this from happening again by reviewing procedures that already are in place, he said
