Glasses-free 3D technology featured heavily throughout the 2023 Asus laptops as announced at CES this week. While the company announced a veritable tonne of products, the main new devices that are catching people’s curiosity are the 3D monitors. No, it’s not because Avatar is in theatres again so we’re just throwing back to 2013, but because the glasses-free 3D technology potentially brings the format to a new audience.
3D is back
There are two glasses-free 3D devices: the Asus ProArt Studiobook 16 3D OLED and Asus Vivobook Pro 16X 3D OLED. Both use the new Asus Spatial Vision, which is the world’s first glasses-free (also known as autostereoscopic, if we’re being fancy) 3D OLED technology. The technology works by using a special lenticular lens (you might recognise the word “lenticular” from those hologram/3D effect DVD covers you used to be able to get) and eye-tracking camera technology to create an autostereoscopic 3D image. However, you don’t have to use 3D all the time, as it’s easy to switch between 2D and 3D content.
The displays have a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 0.2ms response time and 120Hz refresh rate (which is a step up from Asus’ 90Hz refresh rate from last year). It remains to be seen whether this special screen will be compatible with all 3D content currently available, but the company promises that there will be a suite of exclusive apps to watch movies, play games and work on your own 3D models.
That detail of working on 3D models is key, because these devices (as suggested by the ProArt name) are aimed squarely at creatives. Both devices will have NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series Laptop GPUs, 13th Gen Intel Core i9 processors and an upgraded cooling system to allow for the full “150W thermal design power to be safely unleashed”. The Vivobook Pro 16X 3D OLED will have a jaw-dropping 64GB of RAM, so one would have to assume it would be a pretty neat gaming laptop too, if you want to build games by day and play them at night. One would also assume that it is going to be expensive.
What else is included with the 2023 Asus laptops?
For those not ready to splash the cash for 3D, or want to wait until the people who buy the creator 3D laptops to create 3D content to play with, there are also plenty of non-3D options in the range, including the ASUS Zenbook Pro 16X OLED, which unsurprisingly claims to be the most powerful Zenbook yet. It’s got a compact design, 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13905H processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 Series Laptop GPU, and 32 GB of LPDDR5X DRAM.
For those after something more portable, there are the Asus Zenbook Pro 14 OLED and 14X OLED models, which are similar to the 2D 16X but smaller and slightly less powerful.
Artists and creators continued to be the focus across the rest of the ProArt range, including the ProArt Station PD5 desktop PC, which has an all-new thermal design to keep the Nvidia RTX A4000 GPU with 16GB of VRAM cool, along with 128GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM and a 13th Gen Intel Core i9 processor. There are also 31.5” OLED and 24”, 27” & 32” LED ProArt Displays, which are all 4K HDR and aimed at video editors and graphic designers.
For more businessy types, there’s the all-metal ASUS ExpertBook B9 OLED laptop, an ExpertWiFi EBM68 tri-band WiFi 6 router, and a variety of ExpertCenter Minicomputers for office deployment.
But, that’s not all. Gamers got a little something too. The Asus TUF Gaming A16 Advantage Edition has a Ryzen Zen 4 CPU, up to a Radeon RDNA3 GPU, and AMD Smart Access Graphics. The QHD panel has up to 240Hz refresh rate and, in terms of cooling, the laptop has 84-blade Arc Flow Fans and up to seven heat pipes, plus four exhaust vents. For those who like the option to upgrade later, all the RAM and storage slots are apparently fully accessible.
You also have the TUF Gaming F15/17 and A15/17 laptops. The F series offers the Intel options, while the A is focused on the AMD side of the fence. The F series goes up to an Intel Core i9-13900H and the A goes up to AMD Ryzen 9 Zen 4. Both series feature Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs. Another intriguing gaming option is the Asus Chromebook Vibe CX34 Flip 2-in-1, billed as a cloud gaming device. Given the fact that more devices support cloud gaming services like Xbox Game Pass, and Nvidia GeForce Now, it’s not such a weird idea.
Availabilities and pricing are still to come, but one would guess most of the 2023 Asus laptops and computers will be out Q2/Q3, and the 3D stuff will be very expensive.
