Not long after launching its flagship 2023 range, Samsung has now revealed this year’s Galaxy A Series phones, led by the Galaxy A54 5G.
Four devices in total make up the latest mid-range lineup, featuring 5G connectivity across all but one phone. They each offer compelling reasons for consideration, while they’re not necessarily complete linear upgrades from one another. For example, the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G contains the most premium build and internals but the Galaxy A34 5G has a slightly larger display.
Overall, it’s a win for consumers, with plenty of choices now on the table following the flagship Samsung Galaxy S23 launch in February. As brilliant as the top-end Galaxy S23 Ultra may be, it’s not affordable to everyone. Now with new budget-friendly options for 2023, you can get a bit more grunt for your money.
Samsung Galaxy A54 5G: mid-range luxury
A successor to the A53 5G, the Galaxy A54 5G provides upgrades across a few major areas. Firstly, Samsung says its 120Hz AMOLED display is brighter and more visible outdoors, which the new A34 5G also benefits from. Camera enhancements also come to the A54, with Nightography and AI technology assisting dimly lit photography alongside a 50MP main camera and 32MP selfie camera.
Another aspect highlighted in the announcement is the Galaxy A54 5G’s premium build quality. Replete with a rear glass finish, it may be considerably cheaper than an S23 device but it’s likely you won’t notice the difference by holding it.
As mentioned earlier, the Galaxy A34 5G has the biggest display of the new phones, 6.6 inches compared to the A54 5G’s 6.4 inches, it doesn’t claim the same camera pixel count as its more premium counterpart.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy A14 variants possess some interesting differences on paper. If you want a 5G connection, then the A14 5G presents a clear choice. However, it ships with Samsung’s One UI 5.0 OS, while the base A14 comes with the latest 5.1 update. Plus, the A14 has a slightly higher Ultra Wide camera pixel count than the 5G version, making it seem like Samsung had to make some compromises to offer 5G for only $50 more.

Release date and price
Samsung’s 2023 Galaxy A Series devices arrive in Australia starting on 31 March, with prices beginning at $329 for the A14. For $379, you get the A14 5G, while the A34 5G costs $599, followed by the Galaxy A54 5G at $699.
There are also a few early purchase bonuses available. During the first two weeks of availability (between 31 March and 13 April 2023), anyone who purchases a Galaxy A54 5G or A34 5G from Samsung or a participating retailer can claim a bonus 40mm Galaxy Watch4. Additionally, until the end of June, A54 5G and A34 5G purchases come with a bonus year of Samsung Care+ Lite, the manufacturer’s device swap and refresh program.
At the risk of sounding cliched, there does appear to be something for just about everyone with Samsung’s new Galaxy A Series phones. Display visibility upgrades to the A54 5G and A34 5G are nice, although you have to choose between a larger display and a slightly better camera. At the lower end, the slight variations between the A14 versions might give some pause for thought, but the differences should ultimately be negligible.
Most importantly, I hope Samsung gives more devices the Awesome Lime treatment. The vivid colour option truly does live up to its name.
