PS5 gets retro boot up for 30th anniversary, with a catch

Sony has kicked off its PlayStation 30th anniversary celebrations with one heck of a nostalgia trip. For a limited time, you can customise your PS5 to boot up with the starting sequence from any of Sony’s home consoles, including the classic PS1.

Why only for a limited time? Who knows! Perhaps it’s some odd attempt to generate a sense of digital scarcity akin to the 30th-anniversary hardware that sold out the minute it went on sale.

Regardless, it’s a charming nod to the prolific gaming brand’s history, one that’s created many fond memories. Seeing the blindingly white boot-up screen of the original PlayStation instantly brings to mind playing Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and Final Fantasy VII. Good times. Simpler times.

Other than the “limited time” claims floating around online, there’s no clear end date for the nostalgic console themes. Please, Sony, keep them around permanently for those of us who yearn for a time when our biggest worry was trying to get away with doing as little homework as possible.

Sony also dropped a compilation video on YouTube, thanking players for 30 years of gaming. In a massive tease, the video concluded with footage from Bloodborne. Fans have long begged to see a remaster of the FromSoftware game, so only time will tell if the appearance means anything more substantial.
