ChatGPT, Hello Kitty top Apple’s iPhone and iPad charts in 2025

Perhaps to no one’s surprise, ChatGPT was the most-downloaded app on iPhones and iPads in Australia. OpenAI’s generative AI app dominated Apple’s list of most-downloaded apps in 2025, with none of its direct competitors, like Google Gemini, cracking the top 10.

Documenting the most popular free and paid apps in Australia, Apple’s most-downloaded charts look completely different to the company’s App Store Awards announced last week. Showing how hard it is to dislodge popular apps, you could look at previous years’ charts and barely notice a difference.

Some of the apps are popular out of sheer necessity, however. I don’t think we’re downloading myGov by the millions for the fun of it.

Speaking of fun, it’s great to see Hello Kitty Island Adventure and Sneaky Sasquatch continue to rank highly on Apple Arcade. Both games are delightful, and Sasquatch has another major update coming on 16 December.
