The Comsol recall includes 10,000 and 20,000mAh power banks models DPS10GY, DPE10BK, DPC20GY and DPE20GD.
Officeworks variously sold the power banks from 2018 until January 2021.
Due to an internal fault, the power bank’s battery may overheat and catch fire. The risk is serious with fire, injury, or death outcomes.
For more information, consumers can visit their nearest Officeworks store or phone 1300 OFFICE (633 423) or https://www.officeworks.com.au.
GadgetGuy’s take
The Comsol recall is regrettable. Comsol is a reputable brand and Officeworks (Wesfarmers), a reputable company. All good – we are happy to provide publicity to help it round up these power banks.
The biggest issue is not with electrical or electronic goods purchased from reputable bricks-and-mortar stores, but unknown brands purchased online from Amazon, eBay, Kogan, Dick Smith and many more.
These are ‘merchant’ sites where tens of thousands of unknown foreign merchants can flog non-approved electronics knowing that Australian Consumer Law does not apply.
Make sure it has the RCM (regulatory compliance mark)
Any device that plugs into a power point either directly or indirectly is a medium risk device and requires approval.
GadgetGuy receives multiple requests to review high wattage chargers and power banks. Last year two ‘no-name’ high wattage chargers (allegedly with ‘CE’ approval) blew up (sparked and caught fire) on our test. Another two 20K+ power banks died during the review and became dangerously hot when charging.
The approved logo below has three components. The outer triangle, next a C (was C-tick), and the tick.
ESESS.gov.au states
For electrical safety, electrical equipment must not be sold unless the item has RCM in compliance with AS/NZS 4417.1 & 2 and the EESS.
Many products sold here have ‘fake’ or ‘unapproved C-tick marks.
