LG adds QNED Mini-LED to 2021 TV range

What, you ask is a QNED? Well, it is LG’s proprietary Quantum Dot/NanoCell technology using Mini-LEDs as the light source. Its 86″ 8K TV will have nearly 30,000 mini-LEDs back lights for impressive peak brightness and excellent image contrast.

LG’s QNED represents a quantum step forward over LED/LCD backlit TVs. It is not quite yet at OLED standard where each pixel has independent lighting and dimming. But it is far better than full-array-local-dimming (FALD) and streets ahead of the usual edge-lit LED/LCD TV.

Let’s talk QNED Tech

The most significant difference is that tens of thousands (depends on the panel’s size) of mini-LED refresh at 120Hz (times a second) replacing the older and less efficient 50-60Hz refresh FALD or Edge-lit back lighting.

The resultant contrast is 1,000,000:1 – a huge increase compared around 1500:1 for Edge-lit. The mini-LEDs are in 2400 local dimming zones compared to single-figure zones for Edge-lit.

NanoCell and Quantum Dot

While NanoCell is LG’s marketing name for Quantum Dot, there is a difference between how it and other brands implement it.

LG NanoCell uses nano-particles to absorb unwanted light wavelengths to enhance red and green colour purity (LCD uses Red, Green and Blue LCD gates). It creates more accurate colours, even at wider viewing angles.

LG Quantum Dot uses red and green nano-particles that react to the blue micro-LEDs for more vivid colours.

This is the key benefit – NanoCell screens are brighter than OLEDs. And QNED is brighter again than Nano-cells. They are better where you have high ambient light levels like Australian’s love for vast open-plan living spaces.

Is QNED better than OLED? Yes and no

OLED is still the reference standard for colour, black and individual self-emissive pixel control.

But as Nam Ho-jun, senior vice president of R&D at LG’s Home Entertainment Company said,

“Our new QNED series is a premium home entertainment option that expands and improves the LCD TV space and gives consumers another terrific viewing choice. These TVs deliver an experience that set them apart from other LCD TVs and speaks to our commitment to innovation and pushing the standard forward.”

GadgetGuy looks forward to reviewing QNED TVs. Please note that CES 2021 announcements are global and it may be some time before any such tech comes here.
