After crash, Northern California motorcyclist tries to drown deputy who was chasing him

A motorcyclist who crashed while being pursued by a Yuba County sheriff’s sergeant pulled her into a flooded ditch and tried to drown her, the sheriff’s office said.

He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer.

The chase began just before 1 p.m. Thursday in the community of Linda, on the outskirts of Yuba City. The motorcyclist ignored a deputy’s attempt to pull him over and fled on a city street through the Yuba College campus, the sheriff’s account said. At the edge of the residential area, he turned onto a two-lane semirural road and, about 1½ miles into the chase, crashed his motorcycle.

As the unidentified sergeant attempted to handcuff him, he allegedly pulled her into a flooded ditch at the side of the road and held her head underwater.

Fellow deputies pulled the pair from the ditch. The sergeant, who had inhaled water into her lungs, was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The motorcyclist, a 30-year-old Linda man, was also taken to a hospital because of minor injuries apparently suffered in the crash. He will be booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, assault on a peace officer and felony evading.

Sacramento TV station KMAX said the suspect faces earlier charges of elder abuse, battery and resisting arrest and his bail was set at more than $1 million.
