San Jose: Two men arrested on suspicion of running an illegal underground casino

Two men were arrested last week on suspicion of operating an illegal underground casino in San Jose, according to authorities.

Police said that during the summer of 2021, they identified an “underground illegal gambling operation” in the 1600 block of Rogers Avenue in North San Jose and that it was a venue for gambling, buying and selling of stolen property and drug dealing, according to a Thursday news release.

Authorities said they served a search warrant on the operation on Sept. 17 and in the process, people inside the business fled by tunneling into nearby businesses and breaking walls. Officers saw the people trying to leave another business, arrested them and also found an indoor marijuana growing operation.

Detectives got another search warrant and discovered 33 pounds of marijuana, 25 pounds of THC product, a loaded high-capacity rifle magazine and two guns, according to officials.

Two men suspected of owning the business were arrested on Oct. 29 and booked into Santa Clara County Jail, police said. Authorities also recovered more than 300 pounds of marijuana valuing $600,000, two guns, $30,000 in cash and ammunition. Both men are prohibited from owning firearms, police said.
