Donkey Kong Bananza smashes onto the Nintendo Switch 2 today, and its developers recently shared some cool behind-the-scenes insights as part of the company’s regular “Ask the Developer” series.
It’s a fascinating look at the game’s beginnings as an original Switch title and how voxel technology powers the destruction-based gameplay. A side-by-side comparison shows how much of a difference the newer hardware makes, including a lot more environmental detail than an in-development screenshot based on the 2017 console.
“With the move to Switch 2, we gained not only more memory but also greater processing capacity,” said Wataru Tanaka, one of Bananza‘s directors. “That gave us the freedom to incorporate gameplay ideas we’d previously abandoned because they were too demanding.”

There’s a lot of talent behind Donkey Kong Bananza, including developers from Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Odyssey, and the criminally overlooked Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, which makes the three-part interview all the more interesting.
Nintendo letting us take a peek behind the curtain through its curated interviews is cool, but I am also very available if they want to open the door more widely to media. Hit your boy up, Ninty.
Donkey Kong Bananza is a hit with critics, too, scoring 91 on reviews aggregator Metacritic. Daniel Vuckovic wrote for Vooks that Bananza is “a reminder of how ambitious and richly designed Nintendo’s games can be,” while ScreenHub‘s Leah J. Williams heaped praise upon Nintendo’s “bright, refreshing adventure”.
I can’t wait to dive in and see my favourite video game character’s latest adventure for myself.
