Samsung preps One UI 8 security for upcoming AI features

Samsung phones are getting a suite of upgraded security features as part of the upcoming One UI 8 update. There are a lot of acronyms and highly technical terms, but the long and short of it is more encryption and protection for personal data.

It hasn’t been all that long since Samsung launched One UI 7, which included its own set of security upgrades. In the not-too-distant future, One UI 8 will aim to lock your phone down even further. Based on Samsung’s announcement, it’ll more specifically limit the data that apps can access, while personal data stays on-device.

Coming to One UI 8 is a technology Samsung calls “Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection” (KEEP). As phones use more AI technology and personalised features, KEEP is designed to ensure that apps don’t access any more info than they need to.

According to Samsung, the technology creates an encrypted storage section for each app, one that can only be accessed by each specific app. For example, apps and features that rely on user habits to provide personalised functionality, like Now Brief, use this secure storage. In theory, only the apps that require this data can tap into it, alleviating any concerns about your information reaching unauthorised platforms.

Samsung also plans to bolster its Knox Matrix security ecosystem with One UI 8. If the platform detects a compromised device, it’ll automatically sign out of its Samsung account, isolating it and preventing any potential risks from spreading further via the cloud. Users also receive a notification to review all connected devices via the “Security status of your devices” section of the settings.

In addition to the on-device security features, Samsung has various layers of Wi-Fi protection on the way. These range from using “quantum-resistant encryption”, protecting devices while using public Wi-Fi, and anonymising internet traffic.

As announced in May, Samsung aims to launch One UI 8 with its new foldables. Stay tuned for the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked on 9 July for the full details.
