There’s something a bit different about Samsung’s new gaming monitor. Sure, it has all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a gaming display: a high refresh rate, low latency, and a speedy response time. But you don’t see a refresh rate of 500Hz every day, which is what comes with the latest Samsung Odyssey OLED G6 monitor.
It’s a 27-inch display with a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution and a 0.03ms response time, in addition to that aforementioned refresh rate. 500Hz is ridiculously high, and while Samsung isn’t the first to make a monitor with such a smooth refresh rate, it is the brand’s first OLED display to support 500Hz.
Like Samsung’s top-end smart monitor, the Odyssey OLED G6 uses the hybrid QD-OLED technology, which produces more colours than traditional OLED. Compared to older technologies, like LED, OLED tends to produce wider viewing angles and much better contrast levels, resulting in a nicer overall picture.
Regardless of the display type, getting anything to run at 500Hz would require a powerful PC. Video game consoles, like the PS5 Pro, max out at 120Hz. And even for PCs capable of hitting higher refresh rates, only a handful of games would truly benefit, like those commonly played on the esports circuit.
The good news is that getting competitive gaming gear is more affordable. Samsung’s Odyssey OLED G6 monitor costs $1,699 in Australia, which isn’t cheap, per se, but it’s still cheaper than some of the alternatives out there.
In fact, it’s available to pre-order from Samsung’s online store at the slightly cheaper price of $1,529. Afterwards, the gaming monitor will launch more widely across retailers in August.
