Since announcing a bold software design refresh at WWDC 2025, Apple seems to have toned down its ambitions. Dubbed “Liquid Glass”, the translucent user interface set to arrive in the next wave of major device operating system updates, the redesign certainly raised eyebrows.
After Apple rolled out the third iOS 26 beta, users found that the see-through aesthetic of Liquid Glass looked completely different. Gone was the lighter, glass-like effect of UI elements, replaced with a darker, higher contrast design, seemingly defeating the purpose of the visual refresh.
At the time of the Liquid Glass reveal, several designers told Wired that visibility could be an issue. So, while the beta’s tweak addresses legibility, the backtrack has its detractors, including Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman.
It’s still early days, though, so Apple could yet tweak the design further. 9to5Mac has some before-and-after comparisons if you’re keen to see the difference.
