Dolphins (3-7) at Jets (2-7), Sunday, 1 p.m., CBS
Latest line: Dolphins are favored by 3 1/2 points. Over/under: 44.
Dave Hyde, Sports Columnist (Season record: 5-5): Dolphins 20, Jets 13
The Jets have one of the NFL’s worst offenses. Joe Flacco is not going to change that. An old statue in the pocket against the Dolphins’ blitzing defense? That’s a remedy for the Dolphins to continue on this defense-triggered two-game winning streak.
Omar Kelly, Dolphins Columnist (Season record: 6-4): Dolphins 23, Jets 20
The Jets will turn to 36-year-old quarterback Joe Flacco with the hopes of him stabilizing Miami’s blitz overload. But the veteran is a shell of what he once was, and the Jets have a worse offense than the Dolphins. Miami needs to prove it can be a respectable team by sweeping the Jets. The all-time series between the longtime rivals amazingly is tied at 55-55-1.
David Furones, Dolphins Writer (Season record: 6-4): Dolphins 24, Jets 17
The Dolphins are starting to put some positives together, especially on defense. Between rookie quarterback Zach Wilson still recovering from a knee injury and former University School standout Mike White throwing four interceptions in his last game, the Jets are turning to Joe Flacco, who has barely played this season. With Tua Tagovailoa’s finger injury healing, the Jets rank last in scoring defense and total defense, and the Dolphins are coming off a “mini bye” of having last weekend off following the Thursday night win over Baltimore.
Kathy Laughlin, Sports Editor (Season record: 6-4): Dolphins 23, Jets 17
The Jets have the NFL’s worst-ranked defense and are a minus-15 in turnover differential. They have surrendered at least 45 points in three of their last four games. They also have given up a whopping 175 points and 1,890 yards during that span. The resurgent Dolphins have won six of the last seven meetings and should continue that dominance over their longtime rival.
Keven Lerner, Assistant Sports Editor (Season record: 6-4): Dolphins 23, Jets 20
The Dolphins’ aggressive Cover Zero scheme on defense already has the Jets on high alert. After watching Miami shut down Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson with heavy blitzes, the Jets will start veteran Joe Flacco at quarterback over the inexperienced Mike White. Miami will likely rely on its blitz-filled pass rush once again and dare the Jets to try to beat them deep. While Flacco is better equipped to handle Miami’s blitz packages by recognizing coverages and getting the ball out quick, the Dolphins likely will rattle him enough. Flacco is 7-1 against Miami.
Steve Svekis, Assistant Sports Editor (Season record: 5-5): Dolphins 30, Jets 13
The Dolphins defense is flying around, with rookies Jaelan Phillips and Jevon Holland flashing their elite athleticism more and more. The Jets have averaged allowing more than 43 points a game the past four games, so Miami could set its season high for points in a game (currently the 28 scored against the Raiders and Falcons).
