Bill shock: Woolies long-expiry mobile plans spike by nearly 50%

Woolworths has launched its new long-expiry Everyday Mobile plans, ushering in some big changes. They cost more, include larger data allocations, and no longer include a discount on your grocery shopping.

First flagged a couple of months ago, the supermarket franchise sunset its old prepaid long-expiry SIM plans. Woolworths took the legacy plans off shelves in preparation for today’s newly launched range.

Now, the cheapest Everyday Mobile long-expiry SIM plan is $130 for a 180-day expiry, with Woolworths increasing the price by $30. It also includes 75GB, which is 15GB more than the now-defunct plan.

365-day plans saw the biggest increases, up $80 and $100 more per recharge respectively. Upwards of 45% more expensive than the previous plans, an annual Everyday Mobile plan now starts at $250 in exchange for 215GB, while the highest tier costs $320 for 250GB of data plus an extra 30GB for the first recharge. The changes put the monthly equivalent data cap closer to the ACCC’s reported average usage of 15.9GB.

Plan Old price New price Data Promotion
180-day expiry $100 $130 75GB (up from 60GB) $5 off for Everyday Rewards members until 31 December 2024
365-day expiry $170 $250 215GB (up from 125GB) $10 off for Everyday Rewards members until 31 December 2024
365-day expiry $220 $320 250G (up from 200GB 30GB bonus data comes with first recharge
$20 off for Everyday Rewards members until 31 December 2024

5G connectivity is one of the main differences offered by the $320 plan. Previously, all long-expiry SIM plans sold through Woolworths operated on 4G. Even with 5G, the $320 plan caps download speeds at 100Mbps. Faster speeds are exclusive to the $60 monthly SIM plan, reaching 250Mbps. As a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), Everyday Mobile uses the Telstra wholesale network.

Big change to Woolworths Everyday Mobile plans

Regular discounts on groceries are also a thing of the past for long-expiry customers. Under the previous pricing structure, both 180-day and 365-day users received a monthly 10% discount when shopping at Woolworths.

This doesn’t apply to the new plans, as made clear on the product website, similar to Coles’ approach to long-expiry mobile plans. Discounts are still included with Everyday Mobile’s 30-day prepaid and monthly SIM-only plans.

Speaking of discounts, members of Woolworths’ loyalty program, Everyday Rewards, can get $5, $10, or $20 off when buying one of the new plans before the end of the year.

When compared to the cheapest 365-day SIM plans, Everyday Mobile now sits at the more expensive end of the scale. Here’s how the 365-day SIM plan market currently looks:

Taking away the monthly grocery discount is also a blow to customers. It seems that Woolworths is steering people towards its monthly products instead, while further spreading the supermarket giant’s loyalty program across all arms of the business.
