You’re about to see a lot of home appliance, computing, and general consumer tech news over the next few days because IFA 2024 is kicking off in Berlin.
IFA 2024 marks 100 years of the annual tech trade show – an impressive feat of longevity in an industry characterised by rapid change. Of this year’s more than 1,800 exhibitors, several giants are among their ranks including Samsung, LG, and Hisense.
It’s the sort of event you’ll encounter all sorts of consumer tech, with IFA often hosting more home appliances than an event like CES. You’re just as likely to see the latest in smart kitchenware as you are computers or eye-grabbing concept devices.
To help you sift through the chaos of IFA 2024, here are the major announcements from this year’s big trade show.
Major IFA 2024 news and announcements
Talking to your fridge might now be easier
A common theme with the current AI boom is making voice assistants more natural to interact with. Samsung is the latest to join the trend, upgrading the way its Bixby assistant works with home appliances.
Several of Samsung’s 2024 appliances across the brand’s fridge and cleaning ranges will be better equipped to handle more complex queries. For example, you could ask your fridge multiple questions at the same time, like setting a time for dinner and arranging your washing machine to finish accordingly.
Additional feature updates also include more power-saving settings, and the ability to take phone calls on supported fridges. What a time to be alive!
Intel Core Ultra 200V processors support 20-hour laptop battery life
Prior to IFA 2024 kicking off, Intel launched its Core Ultra 200V processors, along with big performance and battery life claims. Laptops with the new chips start arriving on 24 September, and Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC AI features come as part of a free update in November.
Samsung’s food app now personalises recipes to your health goals
A year after launching its cooking app, the big home appliance brand has revealed Samsung Food+, a premium subscription that adds more meal planning customisation.
It uses AI to personalise recipes based on your health goals and available ingredients, prioritising food in your fridge that’s about to expire. You can also use the app to take photos of food and add it to the list of available ingredients.
In Australia, Samsung Food+ costs $9.99 per month, or $99 for an annual subscription.
What is IFA 2024?
One of the biggest consumer technology trade shows in the world, IFA takes place every year in Berlin, offering a glimpse at the future of technology. Short for “Internationale Funkausstellung”, IFA began as a radio exhibition in 1924, expanding in the following years to include all kinds of consumer tech.
Open to brands, media, and the general public, it’s an event that attracts visitors from across the globe. Like any trade show, networking and business deals are big parts of IFA, but it’s also a place for enthusiasts to sneak a peek at upcoming gadgets. Some brands also use the event as an opportunity to showcase concepts that may never be commercially available.
IFA 2024 dates
This year’s event takes place between 6-10 September 2024 at Messe Berlin in Germany. It’s a little bit later than last year’s event, squeezing it tightly against Apple’s iPhone 16 launch event scheduled on 9 September 2024 in the US.
As per usual, major exhibitors announce their wares in the days leading up to the event before displaying them on the exhibition floor once the doors open. With IFA 2024 being the event’s 100th anniversary, there’s also a free exhibition that takes a look at a century’s worth of technology innovations.
