Are you a gulper or a sipper with a hot drink? I must admit I am a gulper. I can hardly wait for my hot chocolate (I don’t drink coffee) to cool enough for me to consume that sugary chocolate mixture. My daughter, on the other hand, is a sipper. She will make a cup of tea and slowly sip it for hours. Sippers of the world, the Ember Travel Mug 2 may just be the product you need to enhance that sipping experience.
What is an Ember Travel Mug?
If you wish your coffee or tea to stay consistently warm or hot, just the way you like it, the Ember Travel Mug is your answer. This smart mug uses smart technology to maintain your desired temperature so every sip is perfect.
No more scalding hot or lukewarm drinks. With an Ember Travel Mug, you can enjoy your favourite beverages at the ideal temperature anytime, anywhere. It’s like having a personal barista that ensures your drink is always just right.
Features
The Ember Travel Mug 2 is a rechargeable, trackable insulated cup with an interactive display that keeps your hot drink warm. The mug is available in black and has a leak-proof lid, which also helps with the insulation process.
Inside the box, you will find the cup and a charging base. The base must be plugged into 240 volts and comes with adapters for several countries, including Australia. Note that this product does not support USB. At $300, it is expensive and maybe a luxury for many people.
You are encouraged to download and use the Ember app with your cup, but on-mug buttons and an LED dot screen enable you to interact equally directly with the cup. A large button underneath the base allows the cup to be switched on and off. Pressing the Ember logo illuminates the temperature display and the cup’s plus and minus symbol. The initial press shows the current temperature followed by the target temperature.
The cup also senses when liquid is in it and will automatically turn on and off based on this. When you are finished using the cup, it is hand-wash only.
When setting up the app, you can name your cup, and this name will display on the LED dot screen. In addition, if you live in the Apple ecosystem, you can use the “Find My” functionality to locate your cup. Both features are handy, especially in an office environment.
On the app, there are several recommended temperatures, including 55 degrees for lattes and 58.5 degrees for tea. You may also change these presets. A tea timer is also provided to enable you to remove your teabag at the optimum point.
Ember also offers a 30-day return on your cup if you are not happy with its performance.

Testing it out
Out of the box, the mug was set to Fahrenheit rather than Celsius. This is quickly resolved by syncing Bluetooth with the app.
My first test was to add boiling water to the cup and use a thermometer to measure the temperature. My testing found that the mug’s readout was accurate within half a degree.
Next, I tested how long the cup would hold its temperature. As the cup is insulated and has a lid, it took the first hour to drop from its starting temperature of 82 degrees to the selected warming temperature of 55 degrees. The cup went on to hold that temperature for three hours, as quoted in the specs.
Could I increase the temperature of my drink halfway through? This indeed worked, as I increased the temperature from 55 to 60 degrees. Thus, if you want a warmer drink halfway through, the Ember mug can achieve this.
This got me thinking: Can the Ember heat water from room temperature? Yes, it can. It took 31 minutes to reach 55 degrees and used two-thirds of the battery, a handy feature if you want a hot drink on the go. For the record, I found 55 degrees to be the right temperature for me.
Ember should think about developing a 12-volt charger that could be used in the car. That way, I could easily add it to my list of caravan gadgets.
Who is the Ember Travel Mug 2 for?
Although, at the start, I felt this mug was for drink sippers who take hours to consume one cup of tea or coffee, my testing proved that I could use the mug as a self-heating thermos. If I made, say, a hot chocolate at breakfast, I could activate the heater at 11:30 and guarantee a hot drink by 12.
I also see no reason this mug could also be used for soups.
Assuming the battery is charged, this mug is for anyone who likes to have a hot drink sometime after they have made irrespective of whether you are a sipper or a chugger.
