3D display technology comes and goes in waves. Inspired by James Cameron’s Avatar in the late 2000s, 3D TVs came and went. Nintendo experienced some success with the glasses-free 3DS handheld, while the likes of Asus and Acer have dabbled in 3D tech in recent years. Now it’s Samsung’s turn, bringing the Odyssey 3D gaming monitor to Australia.
In the form of a 27-inch 4K IPS display with a 165Hz refresh rate, the Odyssey 3D (also known as the G90XF) uses a combination of technologies to produce a glasses-free 3D output. Based on eye-tracking and a lenticular lens, the monitor makes it look like images are coming out of the screen.
To enjoy the 3D visuals natively, you need to have access to compatible media. One example is the upcoming Overture DLC for Lies of P, which Samsung has collaborated on specifically for playing in 3D.
If you don’t have access to any 3D-ready media, Samsung says the monitor has built-in AI video conversion tech that transforms existing videos into a 3D format.
Here in Australia, the Samsung Odyssey 3D monitor costs $2,999, with a pre-order listing live now ahead of its launch later in April.
Alongside the 3D monitor is the Odyssey OLED G8, a 4K 240Hz display available in 27-inch ($1,799) and 32-inch ($1,999) variants. Naturally, the omission of 3D technology makes for a significantly more affordable display.

Like Samsung’s TVs, the Odyssey OLED G8 uses QD-OLED technology, combining quantum dots to boost colour levels versus traditional OLED technology. Although you’re likely to sit directly in front of a computer monitor, OLED’s wide viewing angle makes it easy to see the action, even from side-on.
Same as the 3D monitor, the OLED G8 is available to pre-order now, ready to launch by the end of the month.
