4K outdoor security cameras are coming to Australia thick and fast, with the solar-powered Tapo C660 Kit arriving locally.
Tapo’s $299 camera joins the recently launched Reolink TrackFlex model, with both aimed at providing continuous outdoor recordings. Unlike Reolink’s camera, the Tapo C660 runs on a battery and a solar panel, requiring less than an hour of sunlight a day to keep running.
Positioned as Tapo’s premium outdoor battery camera within the brand’s C6 range, the C660 KIT uses a single 4K lens with an 8MP sensor. It supports up to 18x digital zoom and 360-degree pan-tilt coverage, plus built-in spotlights to record low-light footage.
Tapo says that the camera’s f/1.6 aperture also helps it improve clarity at night. As a result, the camera records night vision in colour.
Included with the camera are AI-based features, like people and vehicle recognition, without a subscription. Along with several other smart home brands, Tapo is leaning into a subscription-free philosophy when it comes to premium-level detection features.
Tapo does offer a subscription cloud service, but it’s not required to access your recordings. The camera has a microSD card slot, supporting up to 512GB of local storage.
According to Neville Wang, TP-Link Australia and New Zealand’s Managing Director, the Tapo C660 KIT is designed to make outdoor security easier.
“Home security shouldn’t demand constant attention,” Wang said. “Too often, outdoor cameras promise peace of mind but end up creating more work through wiring, charging and ongoing maintenance.”
“We saw a clear opportunity to simplify that experience without compromising on performance.”
Available to order now in Australia, the Tapo C660 KIT is currently discounted to $229 as part of a launch promotion.
