Dolphins elevate former Hurricanes star to active roster vs. Jets

The Miami Dolphins have elevated former Miami Hurricanes star running back Duke Johnson to the active roster from the practice squad for Sunday’s game at the New York Jets.

Johnson gets the call up after spending nearly a month on the Dolphins’ practice squad. He was signed by the team on Oct. 26 when running back Malcolm Brown went on injured reserve with a quadriceps injury.

Since his days at the University of Miami, Johnson has appeared in 91 NFL games with 17 starts for the Cleveland Browns (2015-18) and Houston Texans (2019-20). He has totaled 459 career carries for 1,931 yards, a 4.2 average, and eight touchdowns. He also has 307 receptions for 2,829 yards and 12 touchdowns. Johnson also played in two playoff games with one start for Houston in 2019.

Johnson, a third-round pick by Cleveland in 2015, is the Hurricanes’ all-time leading rusher with 3,519 rushing yards. He also had 26 rushing touchdowns at UM.

The Dolphins also have tailbacks Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Patrick Laird on the 53-man roster.

Johnson, a Miami native, also attended Miami Norland High.
