Infant OK after car stolen in Concord with 4-month-old inside

A 4-month-old infant in the back of a car was found unharmed after somebody stole a vehicle in Concord with the baby inside, police said Friday.

Police found the vehicle on Garaventa Drive with the baby inside, about 30 minutes after it was reported stolen, Concord police Lt. Sam Staten said in a statement. Officers responded to the 5400 block of Ygnacio Valley Boulevard around 10 p.m.

Concord police said they consider the case a kidnapping. The suspect in the Concord theft and kidnapping got away despite a lengthy search that included helicopters and police dogs, Staten said. Police did not offer a description.

The scare in Concord involving the baby came just hours after a similar one in Pittsburg. In that incident, police found a 1-year-old girl who had been inside a 2007 Chevy Tahoe that was stolen from Bliss Avenue in Pittsburg.

The California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert in that disappearance and eventually arrested a 24-year-old woman.

Medics evaluated the child and as a precaution, and she was fine physically.

Concord police urged anyone in the public who may have information to contact Detective Sgt. Scott Smith at 925-671-5074.
